CARS OF CATALOGUES.
Two car loads of catalogues for
Sears Roebuck &o Co. of Chicago.
recently arrived at Roseburg. from
which place they were sent out by
parcel post, at close zone rates. The
company had undouh'.edly figured out
a saving of a few dollars this way
That means that the company must
do a big business in that sec ion of the
state to meet this expense alone, be
sides the freight the actual cost ot
the catalogues, immense tomes, be
ing several dollars. That a great
many people actually make a practice
of sending to this firm for their sup
plies is well known. When they do it
they slap their home merchant in the
face, as much as if they actually djd
so physically. These big mail order
houses never have bargain sales.
They make the same immense profit
on all their sales, and the company
referred to is said to have one of the
largest incomes of the country, sur
passed perhaps only by the Ford Co
They get the business by pushing for
it. The home merchant should do
the same thing. He should everlast
ingly keep after the business, aggres
sive from morning until night, and
mrke the mail order system so un
popular it will be a waste of money
to send big car loads of catalogues
this way. Make it a fight to the last
trench.
WHAT CULTURE IS.
In the September Woman's Home
Companion Ida M. Tarbell writes an
entertaining and sensible article en
titled "The Pursuit of Culture" in
which she takes up some of the sub
stitutes for culture which women arc
willing to accept in place of the real
thing. Following is Miss Tarbell's
definition of real culture:
"Culture is a slow process. It
comes from long add close contacts
It is the fruit of reflection, of travail
of soul and mind. Grappling with
something until the very essence of
it has been extracted is a first step.
Thus the taste of essence is learned
and once learned lesser distillations
do not satisfy. Then follows a grow
ing power to discriminate, to distin
guish nice values, to judge of quality,
to answer to beauty, to feel the need,
that what you have though it, may
be little may still be the real thing.
This is culture. It is not baggage,
like diplomas and degrees it is not
things seen lnd heard, miles traveled
or books read. These are the mater
ials for culture: they contribute to it
only when they are absorbed by the
mind and as really lost in it as water
and lime, phosphates and ammonia
must be lost in the soil if they are to
enrich it and enable it to increase its
yield."

MISFITS
11 ill y Sunday dues use pretty strong
language when you come to dissect
it. For instance he said: "Cleopatra
was a flat-nosed wench ho sailed up
the Nile clothed only in sunshine and
climate." No wonder her old friend.
Dr. Aked. got mad inil called Hilly
names.
Ilis sue up of Pilate, who never did
have any friends, was just a little
louder than one hears even on the
street corners. He aid: "Pilate was
i lick-spittle, loo-down free lunch,
hog-pouched, pliable, plastic, ward
heeling, whiskey-soaked graft poli
tician of his day."
Misfits has no use for slang, and.
yet in the hands of Billy Sunday it
xemi to play a part that nothing else
can reach, giving hint audiences he
could reach no other way, and en
nbltng him to do a good that is felt
more in a month or two than Dr.
Aked can do in a life time. 1

What a difference there is. This
has been discovered: Formerly if a
tin owned a horse" and buggy he
,vas thought to be in good circum

Walter Trusty is the name of a

This at least has the advantage of
sound.
A fifty cent show has got to be a

A picnic is a good character an
lyzer. Also shows who are the

An ad. reads: "Ladies Bathing suits
