SHRINERS COUNCIL FORMALLY
OPENS TODAY AT SEATTLE
Seattle, Wash., July 13. In a gor
geous array of barbaric splendor, with
more than 100 highly trained bands
and well drilled patrols participating,
all garbed in uniforms of brilliant ori
ental design, the imperial potentate
of the Shrine order today was escort
ed through the streets of Seattle to
the Moore theatre to open the forty-
first session of the organization.
The council was officially .opened
by Potentate Swalwell of Nile Tern.

ter. Mayor Hiram C. Gill, Chairman
J. E. Chilbcrg and Judge Thomas
Uurke, and were responded to in fit

The day will close with three mam
moth balls, all taking place at the
same time on different floors. The
imperial council delegates and their
wives at the Hippodrome: the mem
bers of the bands and patrols and their
wives at the armory and the rank and
file of (he order on the new Bell stree'
dock. Here the upper and loger
floors wilt be used, with room for 2,
000 dancers at the same time.

DRAWN 6009 CROWDS
Nearly a Million Altogether
Have Visited the Beautiful
Grounds.
San Diego, July 13. June contrib
uted the third largeit monthly attend
ance at the San Diego exposition since
is opening in January, while July,
even at this date gives promise of
breaking all records.
During June the attendance reached
the total of 166,135, a daily average of
5,537. This figure was reached with
out any special events or celebrations
of importance, plainly indicating that
the San Diego Exposition' is drawing
heavy patronage by reason of its
beauty and the extent of ita exhibits.
The only special event which swelled
the crowd was the concert which
Mme. Schumann-Hcink gave when the
sang to 2UJU0 people.
The attendance at the exposition
since its opening is now close to the
million mark and when this figure it
reached there will be a general cele
bration in which all of San Diego and
its contiguous territory will engage.
The occasion will be known as "Mil
lion Attendance Day."
July will undoubtedly contribute
large crowds each day. The caster
travel is well on its way and trains arc
arriving daily with large crowds. The
three-day celebration of July 4 just
concluded poured thousands through
the exposition gates and in the ab
sence of official figures the attendance
(or the three days is estimated by ex
position directors to have been more
than 75,000.
A number of delegations coming to
San Diego for conventions during Ju
ly will boost the exposition attend
ance. Chief of these will be the Loyal
Order of Moose convention which is
expected to be attended by 40,000 visitors.

Mrs. H. S. Towle left this morning
for Oshkosh, Wis., where she will vis
it for a short time. On her return
she will be accompanied by Mr.
Towle's mother.

Father Died Recently
Wm, Woods is in receipt of news
concerning the death of his father De-

other son, besides Wm. Woods, sur
vives. Petition for Administrator
A petition was filed this morning
by the heirs of the estate of Josephine
Logan, deceased, asking that Hiram
Smith be appointed administrator.
There are five heirs and the estate is

Prof. Chester A. Lyon of Lebanon,
returned from Portland yesterday,
with his second lot of boys, six of
them, Alfred Hirshmsn, Harold Lar
sen. Pearl Delethman, Roy Smith, Ed
die Harper, and Albert Phillips. These
he took out to his place. Some of
them were with him last year. Be
sides being given a good time they are
given some practical lessons in farm
ing. Mr. Lyon is their big brother.
Elks Grand Reunion Opens.
Los Angeles, Cal., July 13. The
Elks grand lodge was officially open
ed today. Visiting Elks and their fam
ilies were entertained by the citizens
of Santa Monica, Venice and Ocean
Park, popular beach resorts. At noon
there was a fish barbecue and clam
bake at the Elks' club house on the
waterfront.
Tonight in Los Angeles the Queen
Flora Feast of Flowers will be cele
brated. The principal feature ia a
ealectrkal pageant, the illuminated
floats being escorted by troops and
mounted police.
S. C. Bakcn, of Salem, arrived in
the city yesterday.

yesterday afternoon.
