CHARACTER SKETCHES.
In the history of the world we have
along the way some splendid characte
ketches people do well to study, as
they always have and always will play
a part in the drama of lite, even now,
though hundreds of years may have
passed since occurring. The address
es of Mrs. J. Redding Cole, at Chau
tauqua, have ben good examples of
this idea. She has told with remark
able vividness about Alexander Ham
ilton, Marie Antoinette, the fall of the
bastile, Mary of Scotland, the prison
er and the gitilotine, in connection,
with her life, giving them with such
clearness as to nuke a lasting im
pression of those who have had the
pleasnre and privilege of hearing them.
These addresses have been an educa
tion that will leave its impress. This
is an age of new things, or old things
renewed, and we arc alwaya looking
lor the latest, and yef the old things
ahould be known thoroughly. It is a
, fact that those who are best read in
the past are generally the beat stu
dents of the present
. NO HOT NIGHTS HERE.
The Democrat has received a maga
zine clipping entitled "How to Sleep
on Hot Nights." In Oregon that will
create a smile, particularly this year.
We do not know anything about hot
nights. Our nights are cool and sa
lubrious. Here the question is, bow
not sleep too long nights. The big
thing is to be able to get up mornings
at a proper hour, instead of sleeping
an hoar or two overtime.
SHOULD HAVE PURPOSE.
The man who delivers an address
should have a definite, well defined
message for his hearers. Above it all
there should be a central idea, clearly
Stated, or at least manifest.- Most
speakers show at once what they are
getting about; but there are others
who ramble all over the world, and
when they get through you are uncer
tain whether they have given yon any
thing or have simply thrown a lot of
ice cream and cake at you. There was
one during Chautauqua of this charac
ter, entertaining enough, who said
some mighty good things, but it took
guessing to get at the bottom of his
real purpose, and the thoughtful hear
er was left with his head full of ques
tions marks and an uncertain taste in
his mouth.

Some of these independent fellows,
who don't care a whoop for other
people when they are doing the talk
ing. are mighty sensitive if they get
criticised a little..
Independence is a good word any
way: but proper reasoning always adds
to the effect.
Ring the bells, shout" until your
lungs ache, the liberty bell is going to
to at the Hub.
Some people say this hell diddn
ring for liberty the first time; and
there are those who declare that
Shakespeare is not Shakespeare.
Just the same a sight of it will
' ring one mighty close lo 1776.
Seeing it welds closer the people
if this country into a solid nnion.
Keeping at it will bring better
oads, and we are. as a nutter of fact
etting them right along. The im-
rovement is slow, but it is coming.
Vessels on the roaring deep are
ept busy these days looking for con-
.ealed bombs, all for one fool man.
Corvallis is all right without the
iberty belL It has J. R. X.
The Oregonian says Bryan has he
roine an unpleasant memory. Wait
mil he arrfves at Portland and see
he crqwd that will be on hand sever-
I hours ahead to see him.
The paving fever continues to be
ararm. It's having something other
eople have they wouldn't do without
