WILSON DAYS.
All over the country are being re
ported Wilsun days, expressions of
confidence in the chief executive. It
is a pleasing experience when men
rise above politics and give expres
sion to their faith in the universal
loyalty of our people regardless oi
politics. There has been since the
change of administration an iixlinl
tton to blame financial conditions to
politics and even one of a willingness
to keep the idea of depression preva
lent in order to bring the party in
power into disfavor; but in this mat
ter sentiment has risen above sordiJ
methods with a universal support for
the president in this ciitkal time.
$16,000,000 BOAT.
The Arizona, just launched is 600
feet long, 974 feet wide. 3500 horse
power, travels at the rate of nearly
twenty-five miles an hour, and the
cost waa about $16,000,000, over
five times what it costs to run the
state of Oregon annually; but a lit
tle $300,000 submarine, with several
torpedoes, would knock the big bat
tleship out of commission. It would
take the assessed wealth of four or
five cities like Albany to pay for if,
but the people paid for it, and for
many more nearly like it. There is
a crowd clamoring for more. .It may
be needed if we have it; but it
wouldn't be if we didn't have it
There isn't a war these modern xlays;
but what could be prevented by one
side alone by reasonable diplomacy,
without cowardice. A government
has to have some war equipment be
cause of the custom, but there should
be a reasonable limit.
EXPERIENCES OF BOYHOO.
Boys do well to learn when young,
some of tlie hardships and responsi
bilities of life, for they will need the
experience as the years advance. It
is not well for tltem to have too
many, but enough to give them a les
son they will need in the days of ma
turity. Great men are made in boy
hood. All the time there is being de
velnned fh ftttitr mm Tk.
that gets a crooked and bad start is
apt to remain crooked, and it is much
the same in life, the exceptions being
rare. Vacation season, with its hikes
and work and play, suggests the sow
ing of the right kind of seed for a
good mr.ndhood.
UNIVERSAL SYMPATHY.
1 In the death of C. W. Tebault, the
family have the universal and heart
felt sympathy of the people of Al
bany. The wife, by her gentle man
ners and loreable character has en
deared herself to all who have had
the privilege of knowing her; the sons
have" established an excellent reputa
tion, making many friends in business
and social circles. In the bereave
ment that has fallen upon them they
should have the warm Christian fel
lowship that comes from the depth of
the heart of the public.

MISFITS
Wilson days mean that the preil
dent is solidly backed by the people
of this country in his position on the
great international issue now pending
The US department of tabor hat
just issued a bulletin on rare of the
baby in summer, which Indicates thai
there is one department that is going
to be useful.
We mend tVM) UMl.tHO annually in
the US for sweet things, to say' noth
ing of the girls.
I.at year we consumed 3,743,139
tons of sugar, a pet capita of 85.4
pounds. Albany does its share.
It pays to look ahead when paving.
Misfits, who paid as high as $2.0$
for pavement, is woudtring how much
he lost, if the correct price is $1 05
Portland is wrestling with pave
ment problems covtriug seven differ
en kinds: sheet surface, block, ce
ment concrete,' wood block, llassam
asphaltic concrete, Warrcnite and To-
peka-mix. Quite a mixture.
If the US had been prepared, as so
many jiugoists have been demanding,
when the present trouble came up
there would have been such a dent'
onstxation of men and guns as to
provoke war to the limit.
Funny, but Ijic kaiser's mother was
an englishwoman.
Talk of responsibility. Think of a
Dr. with a life depending upon his
skill and rare.
Or of an editor with a reputation
at stake.
Or of a minister with a soul in the
balance.
