SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGTS.
In the U. S. we are patiently wait
ing to see what Germany hat to say
to our last note. The air it full of
guesses, most of which are of a very
optimistic nature. The sentiment
teems to he that Germany will answer
in a very friendly manner, which It
what the people of thit country hope
for. The masses want peace, firmly
established, and of such a character as
to insure permanency.
In this country Mr. Bryan hat been
delivering some letters to the public
in which he tett forth his ideas of the
situation, which, by the way. are in
accord in a great measure with the
ideas of the people. At a matter of
fact President Wilson has taken sub
stantially the tame position in refer
ence to peace.
A prominent Minnesota paper, re
publican in politics, is so much pleased
with the manner in which President
Wilson hat handled affairt that it has
started a movement for a Wilson day,
not for the purpose of exalting Wil
son, but to do honor to what his
splendid peace diplomacy is doing for
the country.
Another commencement season was
finished this week, one of much In
terest, as such seasons always are.
There is a pep to. things during the
graduation era that gets down into
the hearts of most people. Perhaps
there is a -good deal of sentiment to
things, but it is exhilirating and helps
rather than retards.
One of the bard problems is how
much of the ills and misfortunes of
life on shall stand before taking to
oneself, the soliloquy of Hamlet, "to
be or not to be." There can be only
one answer, and that is, fight it out
to the end, and this is what men gen
erally do, except when driven by tem
porary dementia into putting a quietus
to the things of life. I
