CONTINUES UPWARD.
Dun's weekly reports continue to be
optimistic in character, indicating tha:
the trend of business conditions i'
upward. Here is this week's:
The uncertainty regarding the Eu
ropean situation, and the broadening
scope of the war, have occasioned
some hesitation in general business
and reduced the volume of trading ir
the stock and other speculative mar
kets. The effect of this, however
while adding to the underlying con
servatism, has not materially changed
the recent trend toward normal con
ditions in the principal industries and
trades. The improvement has held its
own; and as the special advices re
ceived this week from ninety leading
cities clearly show, there is a slow but
steady expansion in business.' Activ
ity is most pronounced in the trades
that benefit from the big war orders,
but progress also appears in domes
tic coensumption, especially in the ag
ricultural sections, which have profited
by the high prices for farm product?
and are now sustained by the pros
pects for larger crops this year. It is.
moreover, shared to a considerable
extent by the East, where liberal in
vestment of capital has enabled many
large loans, both foreign and domes
tic, to be taken up. Bank clearings
and railroad earnings have increased
Money continues easy and more gold
has been received from France. Col
lections are more prompt. Exports.
while not so imposing, are still heavy
The iron and steel industry is making
gains, in spite of the international
uncertainties, and argent foreign buy
ing, especially by Russia, is supple
mented by freer orders from railroads
at home. In a dry goods market
there is, m the main, a steady distri
bution and in some lines much activity.
while exports of woolen goods are
large. The shoe trade is moving slow
ly, but some improvement in present
' conditions and in prospect is noted.
Retail distribution in all branches ii
affected for better or worse by the
varying weather conditions in differ
ent parts of the country. The forward
movement generally is slow, and the
fact that there is no disposition to as
sume large speculative risks, in view
of the international conditions with
their serious problems, is altogether
a healthy feature.

Zeppelins Kill Women.
(By United Press Association) '
London, May 27. Sailing within 40
miles of London, a Zeppelin bombard
ed South End-on-the-Sea last night.
Two women were killed and a child
injured by bombs dropped, but with
little material a mage, the official an
nouncement stated. -
The Zeppelin, it is believed, is re-
connoitering for a possible attack on
London, but upon being met by the
British aviators, confined its activities
to bombarding the seaside resort. The
British aviators chased the Zeppelin

ship had escaped.

Gets the Horse Laugh
A farmer residing between here and
Tangent bought a tractor last year
and was going to farm his 160 acre
tract by the improved method. He
got 140 acres plowed and II acres
sown by the shot gun method. The
soft condition of the ground made it
impossible for him o move the hig
machine after the rains and now his
engine sits in the middle of the field
with nice, green grain coming op all
around it June is nearly here and he
still has 20 acres to plow and 149 acres
to sow. There still seems to be hope
for the old horse, and he can well
laugh at the expense of his owner.
