Mr Ja.kson, the republican candidate for
governor of Iowa, asked Governor Boies,
his democratic opponent th? oilier day the
following question:
"Will you as the nominal candidate for
governor, and the real candidate of your
party for United States senator, say whether
you believe in the repeal of the hberman
jaw as now proposed in congress, or
whether you believe in free silver coinage
as proposed by another branch of the ileni
ocratic party?"
The governor answered as follows:
"While the question assumes what no
cue has a right to assume, that I am a can
didate of my party for the United States
senate, and only a nominal candidate for
the office of governor, and relates to a
matter on which no vote of the electors of
Iowa in this campaign can have any effect.
I will for the purpose of putting Mr Jack
son in a position where he will feel under
obligations to answer tho questions pro
pounded by myself to him, endeavor to
answer the samo fully and frankly by say
ing that if I were in a position to vote
upon the question of a repeal of the pur
chasing clause of the Shenuaa bill, I should
vote for it because I believe it has done
more than alt other causes combined to
bring about our present financial embar
rassment. But in doing to I should abate
no part of my most earnest desire to see
some plan adopted by which BOTH GOLD
AND SILVER CAN UK EQUALLY
FRKKLY COlNKD AS A STANDARD
MONKYof the country with safeguards
that will at all times maintain Hie parity
of tho two metals."
Mr Jackson then asked: "Do yon be'ieve
as tlx democratic platform last year de
clared, that all protection Is a fraud and
unconstitutional, and will you if elected to
the United States senate vote to repeal the
McKinley law?"
The governor then answered as follows
"The gentlemau again assumes what
neither be or myself have any right to
assume, that I am a candidate of my party
for United States senator, and I am only
led to answer this question in the hope that
it will aid in inducing Mr Jackson to
answer those of vastly greater importance
to the electors of Iowa which I have pro
pounded to him. For this purpose alone I
will say: I do believe that any law which
hoi for its purpose only the one object of
protection to certain classes of industries is
a fraud and unconstitutional, because it is
impossible to protect any specific class of
our people in our business enterprises with
out at the same time imposing on all other
classes a burdon precisely equal to the
advantage conftrrvil nud I do not believe
congress' Las the constitutional power fo
provide by law that one class shall be pro
tected in its business affairs at the expense
o'nnothcr class. It does nol follow from
this that no protection is to be afforded the
manufacturing industries of this ccunlry.
We must have tariff laws to raise revenue
to carry oq the 'government, and however I
adjusted they will riMMHUIIy afford pro
tection to tho lldine industries. This,
however, will be an incident, instead of the
prime purpose of such laws. To the ques
tion of whether or not I would if a United
States States senator vote to repeal the
McKinley bill, I unhesitatingly answer
that I would, and I would further vote to
supp'y its place with a fair and reasonable
tariff law for revenue only.
Having answered as fully as 1 am able
to do so, the questions propounded by Mr
Jackson, I now respectfully repeat my
questions to hint."
Nearly a half a century ago a maiden
lady residing in Itoxliorough purchased an
axe from George Davis, a hardware dealer
in Manuyunk. Tho axe was in constant
narvlcc, and by its many trips to the grind-
atone was worn down until the steel blado
was no longer of use. Yesterday the old
lilv carried the pole or head of the axe to
M.inujunk to have a new blade inserted
Meeting a friend, he advised her to go to
Davis's store, now kept by two sons of the
former proprietor, and got a new one in
exchange, as the old one was warranted to
last a lifetime. The two Davis brothers
protested against exchanging, while the
lady vehemently urged her rights. A large
crowd soon congregated, every one siding
with the woman. She finally triumphed,
and walked out of the store with a brand
new article, waving it above he head as an
emblem of her victory over the firm.
Wolcott, Allen, I'ugh, Morgan and other
obstructionists tabor day and night in fili
bustering wai fare to prevent the senate's
taking a vote on the repeal bill? Why shoula
Senator Allen who is opposed to repeat
make a ''speech" thirteen hours long to
prevent a vote v.'hen that vote would de
feat repeal? We are not surprised at this
statement of the Telegram for Ir Is in har
mony with its course during the last two
months,
There Is more talk about compromise in
the senate on the silver question. The pro
posed kill extends the provisions of the,
present silver purchase law to January
1095, with a reduction of the monthly pur
chase to a, 500,000 ounces per month, and
for the coinage Immediately of the reign
tormge silver in the treasury . The matter
of tfie bond issue is still open . The most
favorably considered propose ilon contempla-
tea the purchases of silver at the present
rate till 90,000,000 ounces are purchased,
The drubbing which the democrats will
receive in the elections next oarnth will be
a slight foretaste of what they will receive
in 1894 6 if tiiey cease not their bickerings
among themselves.
The campagne vintage of the
year bids fair to be the largest ever
since 1S11.
