ArTKlt TDK MIKRSUN LAW, WHAT?
There teems to be a general belief that
(he Sherman silver pnrchase law 111 te
repealed or lis operation kuspended when
congress meets io extra session. The law
as it stands appears to have do friends. The
gold monometallic oppose it because of
Its quasi-recognlUon of silver a a money
metaL The geuuine bi-metallists denounce
it as a ''cowardly makeshift" because It
tcduces silver to a mere commoJity and
makes the government a speculator in it
Instead ef placing It on the same plane with
gold as real money .
But wlien the unfriendej law is repealed
then what will be done? We do not believe
the present congress, or any American
congress, will ta'te a si;p so threatening to
the welfare of tne people Granted that the
present situation is dangerous and that a
chance is imperative would it oe wise to
jump from bogus bimetallism into gold
monometallism from the frying pan into
the fire?
We have no word of commendation or
defense for the Sherman silver law. On
that measure the record of the Plaindealer
is clear aud consistent, It deuounced It
denounced it from the beginning as Illogical
and dangerous. Under the pretense of be
ing a bimetallic measure it was in direct
antagonism to the bimetallic principle be-
caute it reduced silver to a commodity
traded in it as such, and measured Its value
by gdld alone, that Is not bimetallism.
But the repeal of the Sherman law must
be followed or accompanied by legislatien
that will place our money on a secure
basis. That cannot be done without the
tie of silver in p.Id of gold. The manner
in which the two metals shall be brought
into proper relation? is a subject for thought
ful consideration. It cannot he disposed of
by poll parrot repetition of meaninles8
phrasei . Statesmen of all parties should
unite in trying 10 reach a sound conclu

republican paper do not dare encoura:
our work iL-atn democratic Mr Dounim;
because they well understand that there are
republican 'officials uho&e turn is vet to
come. The democratic papers will not
approve of our cause, because Mr Downing
is a democrat. The populist papers keep
still iU.iouru it is a glorious opportunity
fur them o prove corruption because Govr
Pennoyer stands back of Mr Downing and
thev understand that to endorse us is to
condemn thiH branch of the'r Governor's
administration. Iruiy, u'! this proves how
necessary it is for the per;.e to have
paper, which knows do party, no friead and
no foe. With the excention of the Last
Oregonian, Sunday Welcome and Farmer s
Journal, no paper has cither crcviltei cr
dented our charge. Salem Inarfcntiert.
So far as the Democrat is concerned
this charge is not well founded foi several
days prior to (he publication cf the above
the Democrat said:
If the management of the state peniten-
ary is as bad and corrupt a made out by
the Independent, then there is I ut one
course left for the governor to pursue. II
should at ence remove Downing. It la all
right to have a democrat fcr superintendent,
but he must be honest, careful and vigilant.
But we do not condemn Mr Downing. We
prefer to hear his defense to the charges
mus brought against Mm. Let in m re-
pi.
And, by the way, it is proper to say that
in the same issue of the fldefemient
which mai paper criticised otber papers,
was to be found the above article taken
from and credited to the Democrat.

The nation is 117 years old. During that
time only eleven exira sess(ons of congrei

looking over lie hi.tory ef our country the
fact is dlsclused that on no occasion have
other than extraordinary influences caused
these sessions, ihty have included the
settlement of international disputes, earring

to do its duty.

It Is a coincidence thai at the special

$4,000,000, each dollar to contain 412'i
