London, April 12. The efforts to settle
the dispute between employes and mill
owners 111 the Lancashire cotton district
have failed, and on Saturday, when tho
notices expire, 13,000,000 million spindles
will be idle. A number of linns have ob
tained permission from the masters' union,
on condition of paying large fines, to com
plete important contracts now under way,
but after these are finished no more work is
to be done until the dispute is finally set
tled, by the enforced giving in of one or tho
other contesting parties.

lynching bee nt Pdaniar, in tho Owyho
mountains tonight. In a dispute over a
small piece of land, Peter Meddin, a miner,
shot and killed W A Steel, a carpenter,
lioth were married men. Steel died at 9
p. m.. nnd at 10 a crowd was gathered to
hang Meddin. Tne olficer who has him in
charge tonight telephoned that he would
take Meddin to Silver City in the morning
if nothing happened.

quake shocks were felt throughout Mont
gomery, Warren and Otsego counties this
morning. The first occurred at 11 :25, and
lasted thirty seconds. The second was two
minutes later. In Johnstown and Glovers
ville people rushed wildly from the houses
thoroughly frightened. The rattling of
dishes, falling of plaster, rumbling of build
ings and vibrating of lamps appear to bo
the only retult.
