democrats of Xew York united on should he
nominated, and ordinarily this would have
ueen (rood politics, hut recent events in
Stevf i ork have changed this policy. It is
possible, and even probable, that the ilcm
ocracy of the nation may be constrained to
defeat a candidate because lie is demanded
by Xew York. This grows out of the hot
tactional broils engendered in that state by
the '-snap judgment" convention called by
the state committee. It is highly probably
that the fool friends of Hill have thus early
placed the obstacle over which their favorite
may stumble into defeat. Hill could carry
the south and presumably X'ew York and
ew Jersey, and three or four electors in
Michigan. Heyond this, nothing at this
nine u certain or even hopeful. If it.
should be nominated, the feeling of resent
ment created by the e.Ul of a mi.l winter
convention m his state might subside. Hut
he must have 14 more votes than Xnw .W
sey and 4 in Michigan. There is nothing
more certain in the uncertaimty of politics
than that Hill will come up to Chicago
with a united seventy six votes, but thi
machine made delegation may fall by tho
force of its own weight. Senator Hill has
many admirers, but his methods are
very distasteful to thousands of imlepen
dent democratic voters of the country, and
notwithstanding Senator Hill would be
much prelcrable to any high protectior ist
yet it wculd be impossible to bring these
independent voters to his supiort in caso of
his nomination, in case the convention
goes outside of Xew York for a candidate
a large number of available men are to be

spoken of, would meet the same fate as
Ililr and largely for the same reason, tiov-
ernor luissell, were he ten years old
would make an ideal candidate, liovenior
Pattison of Pennsylvania would make an
admirable candidate clean, conscientious
and able, and it would be well to keep him
in view. Twenty years off (he age of On

Ie nominated, limy of Indiana is spoken
of but mostly by men of his own state. He
may be nominated for vice president, but
not for president. Hoies, of Iowa, if a
western man is selected, will most likely
take the cake. He is incorruptible, coura
geons and able as well as sound on the tariff
question. Whether he could curry Xew
York is a grave question, and equally doubt
ful about carrying enough of the west to
dispense with Xew York and Connecticut.
If Professor John Williams Whiteof Har
rard. accepts Prof Harper's offer of 87.000
a year to fill the chair of Greek at the Xew
Chicago University his salary will be almost
as great as a cabinet officer's, but he will
be worth the price. For Mr White has
dined with Plato and supped with Aristop
hanes for twenty years with aii appetite that
good digestion has waited on, and there is
probably no one in America: unless it lie
Prof Goodwin, who knows more about
Greek and Gnrk life than does he. The
large salary offered him is interesting as
howing how much better this profession of
teacher is remunerated nowadays than it
used to be.
FHEE WOOL.
Il has been decided to attack the larilT
law, section by section, instead of endeav

chairman on the ways and means commit

duties on wool. ('he ''compensatory"
duties on woolen goods are also to be taken
off, but the advaloiem duties on woolen
goods are left untouched, and t'-us they
will be li ft as highly protected as they ever

There is no feature of the democratic
(osilion on the tariff question that has
ueen so uniformly, persistently and will
ingly misrepresented ar that In reference
to wooiens. me Urcvonan has almost
dally stated the democrats proposed to put
wool on thfree list and retain the present
duty on woolens. Hut here comes the
Stalcsmnn and either ignorantly or will
fully makes a statement which upon ihe
very face of It Is false. It says the "com
pensatory'1 duties on woolen goods Are to
be taken off, but the advalorein duties on
woole.i goods are left untouched, and thus
they will be left as highly protected as
they ever were. If the Stulemnn can tell
how woolen clothes are left as highly pro
tected as ever ofter removing a duty of
494 cents per pound It may be able to
shield Itself from Ihe charge of open mis
, representation. Hut It can not do so. To
remove the "compensatory" or specific
duties from woolens leaving the adva
lorein duties still on means a reduction of
nearly one-half of the present duties on
woolens. A cause that needs so much
fallacy, sophistry and willful mlsrepiesen
tatlon to prop It up as prctec'.ijnism does,
is one tint should be crushed out.
It Is but possible, but not certain, that
the raid now made on the democracy bv
Senator Hill for a presidential nomination,
may defeat the selection of Mr Cleveland
as the democratic candidate; but theie It
no possible contingency In which Hill
could effect his own nomination. Th.
democrats of the nation are not prepared
to enter one of the most Impoitant contests
of our political history with a candidate
who would symbolize tho purpose to na
tionalize saloon politics, w lib political theft
as one of the jewels of the new political
constellation.
V e say that It is possible that the "snan-
judgment'' convention called by Senator
It'll In New York to assure a solid delega
tion for himself for president, mav defeat
the nomination of Cleveland, but it is not
at all certain that It will do so. An over
whelming majority of the democrats and
tariff reformers of the country desire the
nomination of Cleveland as against all
others; and it is entirely safe to sai that
lour-tittris ol them, taking in the entire
country including .New York, very nasi-
tlvely prefer Cleveland to Hill, while a
large percentage, and quite enough to
control every debatable state, would vote
for any reasonable candidate of any other
party to defeat the election of Hill. This
Is not sentiment; It is the plain truth, and
It should be presented In cold types for the
study of the men who are active In thi.
present hiii raid upon the democracy.
n line me aeteat ot Cleveland is nnsU
ble by this presidental raid of Senator Hill
it is not only possible, but it is even nroha
ble, that the democratic people of the ITn-
Ited States will nominate Mr Cleveland
with or without the vote of New York
State ; and if so nominated, he would be
elected not only without the electorlal vote
of ,ew ork.but the certainty of his elect
Ion would compel even Senator Hill to
fall in w ith the party and give his state to
Cleveland.
Xew York democrats of the Hill school
have twice defeated democratic candidate
for the presidency by deliberate perfidy
Hancock was sacrificed in iSSo.andin iSSS
Cleveland was deliberately betrayed to
make Hill governor. There is natural
distrust, therefore, of the Hill leaders, and
the only certain way of eliding a demo
cratic president this year would be to
nominate the strongest man, regardless of
me nerocs ot political theft, and corr.nel
meir support by teaching them that they
are not necessary to democratic success.
