The people of Connecticut are American
citizens and patriots, but they cannot saj

as well Tote for a wooden nutmeg as for
an honest candidate for governor.

&. The Welcome hi an outtburst of enthu
siasm over the very hopeful prospect be

next president 6ays that both Wisconsin
and Michigan provide for electing electors

A dispatch from Philadelphia, says:
!".e Clevtland-Pattison forces won a
sweeping victory at the democratic pri
maries in this city to-night, and by win
ning this battle they have practically se
cured control of the ten national delegates
and also of the state convention, which
will send eight delegates at large.
The leaders of the Clevcland-Pattison
forces, marshaled under Secretary of State
Harrity, have captured all of the conven
tions in the five congressional districts.
Congressman McAleer, the leader of the
Hill faction, was knocked out in nis own
district, which Samuel J Randall had pos
session of for so many jears.
McAleer has been working in harmony
with Squire McMullen and the (Juay men
for years. To-night the trin!ltoiit dem
ocrats took a hand In-ths" game &r.d won
quite easilv.
Ihls YlciVy js much more significant
because of McAleer's friends having last
week taken a bold and public stand against
Cleveland.
The Hill men held a conference to night
and arranged to contest half the seats at
to-morrow's convention in the hope of
ki ocKIng Cleveland out.
. .1 J Richardson iuemWr of the national
democratic committee from Iowa says: '"Our
people are for Uoies and Cleveland. I do
not mean by that a ticket with ISoies at the
head and Cleveland for second place, but
that we are coming to believe that (iover
nor Boies will he the strongest candidate
that the democratic party could put into
the field for president. His name is cer
tain to be presented to the llemocrutie Na
tional Convention. He can carry Iowa for
the democratic party, of which the proof
lie) in the fact that he has crrrie l it twice
when lie was himself a candidate for Gov
ernor. If the convention is in such spiri'
that it will insist on nominating an eastern
man our eople will be for Mr Cleveland.
We are told that Mr Cleveland has the mass
es of democrats in New York favorable to
his renomination, but that the democratic
leaders hold the organization against him
and that he aimot get the delegation from
t he st.iie of New York to vote for him at
t he 11: tiomd lonvention. We hear, too,
that Senator Hill has a call on New York's
vote at the convention. Throughout the
west and northwest Hill is scarcely men
tioned, lie has neither public sentiment
for him nor will he have delegates for him.
If New York dcnuHTats fail to appreciate
this situation and the sentiment is still for
an eastern candidate Senator (lorman of
Maryland is as likely as any one to secure
the prize."
A SOITHKKN OPINION.
Mr Hill is rightly regarded as one of the
most successful political leaders in New
York and possesses remarkable nbility-of a
certain kind but he doesj not enjoy the
confidence and respect of the country, and
he could not be elected president if he
should be nominated. He would be able to
carry the southern states, but he could not
carry the country. In our opinion, Mr Hil'
has been grossly misrepresented und de
icnes much more of the respect of his
party than he possesses; but it is well to
look at the situation as it is, His organs
throughout the country have been sounding
his praises as a presidential possibility for
the last three years, but outside of New
York and possibly one or two southern states
there is no assurance that he will lc able to
carry a single state in the convention, nnd
if he should be nominated there is good
reason to believe that he would lose the
states that are necessary to the election of
the democratic ticket.
The only hope of the democratic parly is
in a strong candidate upon n:i honest plat
form. As Senator Ve-t says: "It is Cleve
land and Hu'im, or Cleveland and liray; but
always Cleveland." Charleston IS C)A'..-:w
And Courier .
The president has finally sent Ids men
sage on the Chilian liouble to congress
He goes over the grounds fully traversed
by the public press heretofore but adduces
nothing new of importance. The difficulty
Is one that should, and we believe will, he
settled by diplomacy or atbltration. To
punisb so small and insignificant a nation
as Chili, wculd, under the circumstance,
cost over to hundred million Jollars. It
dees seem that in this enlightened age
these dilliculties, such, at least as this one,
should be settled without an appeal to the
arbitrament of the sword. Between in
dividuals every enlightened man says dif
ficuhles should be settled without an ap
peal to duelling. And there is just as
much reason for nations settling their dif
ferences in the same way. It would not
be particularly creditable to the United
States to crush out Chili w ith her 2,500,000 1
people.
LEVEL HEADED.
The 7Vfgrim, speaking of the litigation
growing out of the work of the equalization
board savs:
As usual, it was the honest, straight
forward wav. It was simply to obey the
law, not only 111 reirard to mortgages but
in regard to all other classes of property us
well: Assess all at its full cash vahu), as the
law requires. Then all this technical talk
about discrimination and equity, and every
device and trick and subterfuge nnd sophis
try by which the capitalist manages to
evade paying taxes, would have had no
chance to exist. But noassessor in all the
state was found who had the courage and
the moral honesty to obey the law, and set a
most-needed good example, nnd so the
whole businwn is in a w;re muddle than
0 ver.
This is both honest nnd level headed. No
man should ftsk that nncther's property
should be assessed at ittt ensh vnluo unless
he is first willing that his oTU should be.
ITS rTN.NY.
Tht WtrlJ'i Was-h'ngton special says
that two weeks ago, Mr Cleveland decided
to announce a positive and final withdraw
al from the presidential contest. He com
munlcated his determination to a few of
his Intimate friends, They urged him
vehemently not to do so. Finally, against
his own Inclination, he agreed to postpone
the announcement for a short time.
