wus connection it is proper to call atten
won to the fact that most of the democratic
conventions have heretofore been held in the
east, and it is time for the west to demand ac-
KnowIedBmcnt of lis own importance.
In 1S32 was held the fir.t democratic na
tlonal convention for the purpose of nomina
ih'B a vice-president, Jackson brine the
unanimous choice of the party for president.
Since that date the present system of nomina
ting candidates for president and "ire-president
has been in vogue.
The convention of 1S32 was held in Iialii.

held in Baltimore in May, that ol 1S40 in

The first record of the aoDuintment nf ,
national democratic committee to take charge
me ucmocrauc campaign was in 1844.
Previously, committees had been appointed to
draf: addresses. That appointed in 1SS4, af
ter drawing up an address nfttrwirds duly
yuuiisnea considering the question of
their duties and after receiving the written
advice of the chairman of the demo
cratic convention of that year Uendiick B
Wright establiahed headquarters in this city
-..u luMuucieu me national campaign with
great vigor. The first chairman of the na
tional democratic committee thus chosen was
KobsrtJ Walker, then a senator from Missis
sippi and subsequently secretary of the treas
ury in Tolk's Cabinet, The precedent then
established has continued, and craduallv ih.
national comaiittee has possessed itself of the
province of naming the places aad dates for
holding conventions, the number of delegates
to compose the same and various other im
portant amies.
Trior to the convention of 1S32 nominations
were made in various ways. Washington was
elected president with no appreciable opposi
tion. After his two terms by common con
sent Adams and Jeflcrson were the candidates
of the two parties then known as federal and
iepubii:an for president, and Adams receiv
ing the most electoral voles was declared
president and Jefferson vice-president under
the old constitution.
The first congressional caucus to norrinatc '
imimuaies lor p-esident and vice president
it said to have been held n I"iiilade!phia in
iSjo, and t: hare nominated Jefferson for
president end Hmr for vice-president. In
1S0S, when Jefferson's second term was about
to close, a congressional caucus aas held In
thi city, and Mr Madison was chosen, and he
was again chosen by a congressional caucus in
ioi2. in lbiO lames Monio; was nomina
m uj a congressional caucus. In 1S24, the
democratic congressmen declined 10 go into
caucus ior lire purpose of nominating a presi
dent. A caucus was held , however, by 06 out
ot 21O democtaiic members, and W illiam II
Crawford was nominated by the "Rump."
jacKson, Clay and John Quincy Adams also
ran, with the result that the election was
thrown into the house and Adams was chosen
by that body. This was the end of the con
gressionai caucus. Jackson appealed to the
country, being put in the field by the demo
cratic members of the Tennessee legislature
an u elected.
