Our democratic cotemporaries are insisting
that the nest democratic state convention
should select governor Tennoyer as its candi
date for the United States senate. We have no
particular objection, except that there will be
no senator to e'.ect by the next legislature.
It seems now to be the almost uneversal
Opinion of the democratic press throughout
the country that Cleveland will be the presi
dential nominee of the party, and Boies, of
Iowa, seems to have the call for second place.

If there is a repubhosn paper in the east
which wishes to tell its readera the truth, i'
will say to them that in figuring on the re
sult of toe presidential election Wisconsin
must be put in the democratic! column,
Milwaukee Journal.
In former presidential eleetions the doubt
ful states were New York, Indiana, New
Jersey and Connecticut. The results this
fall add to the list Massachusetts and Iowa,
and in all six of these states the democrats
sow have the decided advantage. There is
in faot, hardly a stsce in the union that the
republicans will not hare to tight, and fight
bard to retain. Volet
The Globe Democrat publishes a sort or
"want" advertisement in the foim following:
For president in 1892 The man who can
cause New Yoik to give a republic majority
and keep Iowa and Massachusetts from going
democratic.
It is evident that thi G-D sees no such
candidate among those now talked of for the
nomination. It not only feels uncertain about
New York, Iowa and Massachusetts, but i
not overwhelmingly confident that Ohio will
stay with the lepublicans next year. In a
long editorial on the lessons of the election it
declares that '".he republicans will have to
work vigorously and intelligently from the be
beginr.inq to the end of the campaign" if they
would hold Ohio in I S92. These admissions
by the leading republicanorgan of that sec
tion are a curious commentary on the attempt
of certain less conspicuous journals to find en
couragement for the republican party in the
result of the recent elections.

The long session of congress will convene
on Monday December the 7th, The selection
of a speaker will, (as usual,) be an importent
event. The character of the legislation of
the session is largely molded in the selection
of a speaker. The following are democratic
candidates: Mills, of T;xas, Cii-p, of Geoi
gia, McMillan, of Tennessee, Springer, of
Illinois and Bynum of Indiana. There are no
republican candidates as that party has but S7
members in the house while the democrat
have about 230. All the candidates are de
voted to the principles of tariff reduction.
There will be but one mind on that subject
among democrats in the next senate or house.
There is not a single democratic protectionist
in either house. The outlook is rather favor
able to the election of, Mills, though Crisp
has a hearty following. McMillan is a great
democrat and very popular. The contest is
said to be a friendly one.
WASHINGTON.
(From our rc&ular correspondent.)
Washington, Nov. 16, 1S91.
Mr llariison is usually verv careful uf
the language he uses In his public speeches,
but he made a break in his speech of wel
come to Scncr Mont", the new Chilian
minister, that will be snickered at in di
plomatic circles nil over the civilized
world. After telling the minister how
glad he was to receive him, he told him of
the policy of this government in dealing
with its neighbors unfortunate enough to
stiller from internal dissentions and civil
war. Said he: "It is our policy to pre
serve an honorable and strict neutrality,
as was dona during the late war In
Chill. Tempting commercial and pollti
cal advantage may be offered for our aid
or influence by one or the other of the
contending parties, but this we have not
deemed to be consistent with the obliga
tions of intcrnatioual honor and good will."
It surely must have been difficult for Senor
Montt to keep his face straight while list
ening to this high-flown talk, in view of
the very short time since the newspapers
of the entire world were ringing with
charges cf bad laith made by this govern
ment agjlnst llipolvtc, the present presi
dent of 1 lay tl, because of his refusal to
cede the Mole St Nicholas to the United
States, in keeping with the promise he
had made to obtain the support of this
government to aid him in driving Presi
dent Legitime out ol llayti, and in as
suming the presidency thereof himself.
That was an odd sort of honorable neu
trality, wasn't It? And Senor Momt must
have wondered if Mr Ilnirison considered
his bargain with the Insurgent Ilipolyte
"consistent w ith the obligations of Inter
national honor and good will." Even Mr
Harrison's friends admit that he made a
mistake "In the phrasing of this speech,
short as it was .
It is evident that some sort of a deal h
being hatched, whereby the postmasters of
the country arc to make their iulluencc
felt In the election of delegates to the re
publican national convention. It is -need?
less to say that this movement Is in the In
tcrest of the present occupant of the White
House. It is being manipulated by lloss
Clarkson, aided by Mr Wanamnker, who
is said to be ambitious of becoming a pol
Itlclan. Within the last week a number
of the more prominent postmasters have
been In Washington, and none of them
went away until Clarkson had taken them
to Mr Wanamaker's residence, where a se-
cret conference was held at which the
whole program was gone over and ex
plained, as far as lloss Clarkson deems it
wise to trust the postmasters. The only
aid that Mr Wanamaker can give is to let
the postmasters know that he approves of
their undertaking the work mapped out
for them bv Boss Clarkson, who lets them
understand tint Mr llariison Is behind
him.
It Is row stated tnal Secretary Foster
has made up his mind, after consulting Mr
Harrison, not to make a change in the office
of the Comptioller of the Currency, not
withstanding the popular impression that
the incumbent, Mr Lacey, had by his
seeming carelessness In the matter of the
wrecked national banks In Philadelphia,
Boston and elsewhere, lost the confidence
of the public, which it is so necessary for
the holder of that position to have, if dis
credit is not to be brought upon the entire
national banking system. It is understood
that Secretary Foster will, in his annual
report, attempt to show that It is weakness
In the law aud not lack of vigilance on the
part of government officials that is to blame
for the hoodwinking of the department by
unsound banks.
If confidence were votes, all of the can
didates for speaker would be elected.
Votes are mighty scarce here, because the
members of the House are apparently in
no hurry to arrive. It Is noticeable that
the fighting between the friends of several
of the leading candidates has again taken
on the vicious and personally abusive style
that was so much deprecated by the cool
headed friends of all the candidates when
it was first begun several months ago.
These hot heads seem to lose sight of the
fact that when they abuse a candidate everv
word they say is treasured up by the re
publicans for future use against the entire
democratic party. The great mass of the
democratic party has no favorite for
speaker, all it asks is that the man select
ed be sound In the fundamental principles
of the party.
If the news received here by the Bra
zilian minister Is trustworthy, the flurry
in that country Is over and the republic
still lives.
Ex:Gov. Foraker is here, ostensibly on
professional business, but it is known that
he is pulling some wires that run pretty
close to Mr Blaine ir. order to get help in
his fight against Sherman. He is going
home today, but he will return oil the 23rd
inst., to help the Cincinnati folks try to
capture the republican national convention.
