One of tho greatest industries in the
Oregon of the future will be the growth
of fruit, in which tho state ii destined
to equal, if not surpass, California. At
the present time it is becoming an ab
sorbing topic, thougii nerelolore it has
laid almost dormant, much depends on
its being pushed. Realising this, and
the advantages that will arise from a big
movement in this direction, a corpora
tion 1ms jut been organixed in this city,
the articles being tiled with the secretary
01 state lonay. it win oe Known as the
1010 orennru (jo. 1 ne incorporators are
Jay W Blain, 8 K Young, WT Radir L E
ItlainandK S Barrows. The head office is
Albany. Iho capital stock has been
placed at $r'.),(XK), divided into 50 shares
olxiUUUeach. The obicct of the incor
porution is to plant trees, vines, See., to
erect canneries, dry houseB, evaporators,
sen anu Handle iruits, lands, dec.
For the purpose 1000 acres of fruit
land, of a line granite soil, located near
Tolo, in Jackson county, has been bond
ed. It layB beautifully, above the frost
line, on me n 1 railroad, nnd there is not
more than forty acres of waste land in
the tract. Jackson county fruit already
has a reputation, and the country along
me rairoau is nst lining up with lrtnt
farms, so there is already a market there,
buyers going directlv to the orchards for
the fruit, one reason for selecting the lo
cality at the present time, as it insures
the success of the company from the
start. Kogue river peaches have been
on the market for several years, and
there is no question as to the stability of
the market for them. The land is also
adapted to prunes, vines, ic.
Theplan of thecompany is to set out the
tract to fruit trees, as desired, dividing it
up into 5 to 20 acre lots, and placing the
same on the market at once, giving bonds
tor them and delivering the property
in three years, with growing fruit trees
in prime condition on tliesame, payments
being made monthly. The growing de
mand is for small fruit tracts, and there
is no doubt such a movement as this will
meet with a ready response. It is a big
thing either for the investmentof money
in tlieBtock or in the lots to be Bet off.
No country offers a more stable market.
There is the whole Northwest. Besides
tins state, there are Washington, Idaho,
Montana, JNevada. Colorado, etc., non-
fruit producing states, crying for fruit.
Oregon should supply this market.
iienee a uetier neiu is oaereu lor inveHt
ment than gold mines, for the result can
be seen. This move is but a starter for
other enterprises of a like nature in
our own part of the state as the times
justify. Thousands of dollars should be
put into fruit culture in Western Oregon,
and there is nothing that offers better
prospects of richer returns. Any one
interested in the matter can secure par
titulars by calling on Mr lay Blain, at the
Oregon Bank.

Newport, Aug. 31s, 1891.
This populur resort has fully sustained
its character this year, and though the
season will end in a mouth visitors keep
up in numbers and interest. It is all
life here. All sorts of games and sports
are introduced to give interest to the
multitude.and for a change Foulweather,
Seal Rock and other attractive localities
are visited. There 1b one feature in hotel
life that is more prominent here than
elsewhere. The patient mother with her
yomia mimes or children is to a great ex
tent subdued at these resorts and cannot
ask mi the thousand things children
need If she should do this disaster
would follow. Hut at the Bay View
House voung ladies and children relieve
their mothers and take charge of the
whole business. These comforting addi
tiona to every family swarm around Mr
and Mrs Aubey as 11 they were the pa
tient parents of all of them. And strange
to say the Abbeys are as fond of this
attention the children are to give it to
them. Parents nt this house have but
little to do with their children after they
are turned out in the morning. This is
one among the many tilings that make
Bay View House so popular. Every
mother knows her children are saf9 with
the Abbeys for the little ones look to the
landlady for protection as well as care.
should the mother feel a little inclined
to be arbitrary. It is a noble trait in the
character of theso popular hotel keepers
ana one that every guest 01 isay v lew
House is proud to know.
A day or two since, children were bent
on having a picnic over on Big Creek.
They went to Mr Abbey fora basket din
ner, which with some iruit purchased Dy
par2nta, was prepared making up a
Drincelv lunch. The Abbevs entered in
to the spirit of it and had a team called
to take the lunch baskets and children
under five years 3ld over to Big Creek.
It was along walk, taking in guests
whose ages ran from five years' to sixty.
There were twenty-eight persons in line.
un the return 01 the party in the aiter
noon State Treasurer Metachan appeared
wiping the sweat from his brow and
demanded the production of tho man
who said it was only two miles to Big
Creek, for he had in the round trip walk
ed ten miles. The sincere expression on
Treasurer Metachan's countenance in
duced his friends at once to inform him
that the man he wanted left town on the
afternoon boat, but anything he needed
for himself could be had under a physi
cian's certificate that it was required
only for medical purposes. This was a i
comforter and a calamity wag prevented.
The Chinese on Friday evening had
what thev call their Masonic meeting,
ushered in by yolley after volley of lire
crackers. The grand Mogul was rigged
up to kill, and being within a circle ot
burning tapers, on the street, held a pow
wow over each taper. When the per
formance was over a rush was made to
the feast of roasted chickens, pigs, etc.,
interlarded with beverages peculiar to
christian countries, including gin and
garlic.
Saturday evening the semi-weeklv hop
was given at the opera house and was
largely attended by IikIicb.
' On Saturday afternoon a canny pulling
was given on the beach near the bathinir
grounds in honor of Miss Carrie Friend
ly, of bugene City, who was on that day
17 years old. This birthday party was
largely attended and a very live v and
enjoyable occasion was had. Miss
friendly was the recipient of many con
gratulations and a magnificent gold
watch from iier father and mother. The
entire group was photographed. Miss
Friendly is quite a favorite of this resort.
Sea bathing on Sunday morning was
largely patronized. Newport has never
had an accident on her bathing grounds,
and cannot have, as the waves wash the
beach diagonally across the Bay, throwing
everything of which the waves are mas
ter upon the the beach. Being within
the harbor there is no danger from
undertow. Cramps may happen to
swimmers under any circumstances, and
at any place.
Cranky Officials. Eugene evidently
has the crankiest lot of city officials in
the TJ. S. The Guard says: "Some
trouble was caused Saturday evening by
Marshal Eastland notifying the Eugene
band that they would be arrested for vi
olation of a city ordinace if they gave
their open air concert on Willamette
street within fire limits. The bovs con
cluded to take the chances, the marshal
yielded, and a fine concert was given.
The band boys deserve aid in their efforts
to lorm a good band, instead of any at
tempt oy the city authorities to weaken
or discourage them."
Rkmovkd. W E McPherson has re
