THIUII PARTY IN OHIO.
The third party in Ohio adopted a plat
form that demands.
"That taxation national date or muni
cipal shall not be ued to build up one
Interest or claw at the expense of aiio'.her.
The abolition of the national banks a a
bank tenure and as a substitute for
national bank notes Is demanded, and that
full legal tender notes be Issued in suffi
cient volume to conduct the busines of
the country on a cash basis. The pay
ment of all bonds of the government
Instead of refunding them in such money
as they are originally made payable In:
me government ownership ot ail means ot
transportation and communication, and
liberal pensions to Union soldiers is
favored. A woman suffrage plank Is In
cluded In the platform. The platform
favors government loans directly to the

silver, opposes alien ownership of lands,
and demands that congress devise means
to obtain all the land already owned b;
foreign syndicates, It also demar.dt that
all lands held by railroads and other cor
porations in excess ot what Is actually
needed, be reclaimed by the government
and held for actual settlers only. It de
mands a graduated income tax; demands
the enactment and rigid enforcement of
laws for the suppression of all forms of
gambling In futures, and a strict enforce
ment of the laws against adulteration of
food products. The election of United
States senators by popular yote Is favored.
The platform also demands the forfeiture
bv the Standard Oil Company of Its
charter. A resolution was adopted favor
ing government or state control of the
sale, manufactuie. Importation and expor
tation of spirituous liquors as a recom
mendation to the national convention, as
a solution of the liquor problem."
These leaders were evidently guileless
of any motive to make their party strong,
numerically. Adopting the policy of gov
ernment ownership of all means of trans
portation and communication, woman
suffrage and government loans directly to
the individual will be a loan that will
seriously handicap the party when ft
comes to show hands at the polls.
The State Democrat of Aberdeen, South
Dakota, has submitted Interrogatories to
seventy-five of the leading democrats of
South Dakota for the purpose of ascer
taining the consensus of opinion of men
who will have much to do in shaping the
action in the next state convention.
Twenty-seven have leplied with the
following results: i. What question
should be made more prominent in the
1S92 platform ? All answer tariff reform,
'five adding silver, retrenchment, and anti
trust legislation. 2. Do you favor the
free, unlimited, and independent coinage
of silver? Fifteen answer no, seven yes,
lout consent to a party with'Jgold, three
limit coinage to the American product,
and one says it Is not a party question. 3.
Should the presidential candidate come
from the west? All say a western candi
date is not necessary , save one. 4. Who
is your present choice for president?
Cleveland, 19; Hill, 3; Gray, I ; Campbell,
I j Paulson, 1; Boies, 1; no choice, 1. Two
favor 1 1 111 for second choice, 3 Gorman, 1
Carlisle, and 1 Fuller. 5. Is the people's
party growing In your locality? Six
answered affirmatively, others thought It
was holding its own.
The commercial travelers of this country
now number over 2 40,000, and reach In

An idea may be formed of the vast extent
O f the western grain fields from the fact that
the Central Vermont propellers, in connection

somebody is going to go without wheat.
The latest estimates place the wheat
shortage at 420,000,000 bushels, and the
apparent supply to meet this want fiom
exporting countries at 3SS,ooo,noo bushels
or 32,ooo,coo bushels short of the require
ments. In this estimate the L lilted
States Is credited with rn exportable sur
plus of 152,000,000. Canada S.ooo.ooo and
the Argentine Republic with 5,ojo,ooo, a
total American surplus of 165,000,000
bushels, leaving Russia, India, Hungary,
lurkeyin Asia, Egypt and Northern
Africa to supply the rest.
As the American crop has been prlnci -pally
harvested In good order, there Is
little doubt of our ability to supply at least
150.000,000 bushels, and if the total crop
s 32,000,000 short of the demand, the
wheat farmers of the United States should
be able to say something about the price
for which they will tell. The American
farmer seen s to be in it this year.
