V. & Gov't Report, Aug. 17, ittq,
The Chicago Tritwue (Kep) calls upon
certain unturned parties to "stop lying and
build sorae tin plate mills." 7V Republic
haj hem more polite in dealing with the al
leged manufacturers of American tin plate,
nut neither democratic politeness, nor repub
lican denunciation, nor an enormous protec
tive duty of 844 per ton on the steel sheets
from which tin plate is made hat induced any
one to mnnufact ure A merican t in plates for
commercial instead of for political uses. We
notice in the New Yoik Evening Post of last
week another letter fiom Messis N L Cort &
Co, the well known dealers in tin plate, in
which they announce that as yev they have
received no cfTer from any American manu
facturer to furnish at any price any portion of
the 6,000 boxes of American tin plate which
they offered to buy during the current year.
Weobseive also that the hullabaloo in the re
publican newspapers ilwut the manufacture
of American tin plate and the establishment
of tin plate factories on a vast scale at
different points has suddenly stopped we
might almost siy collapsed. The, efnblic
pr'cking of the bubble seems to have been
effective, but, in order to avoid misapprehen
sion, we may add that Messrs N L Cort ft Co '
offer for 6,003 boxes of American tin plate to
be delivered at sny time within a year still
holds good.
The Times Mountaintex in its chronic way
groans over the divisions in the democratic
party on the silver question. That paper would
do well to reflect upon the very radical differ
ences in the republican party on that subject.
Take Senators Mitchell and Dolph who are
each distinctively republican leaders. Dolph
bows and worships devotedly at the shrine of
the gold god on Wall street, while Mitchell
with equal religious devotion bows with equal
devotiob before '.he silver god of tne west.
