APAKTY Oh" ViHNUJItN,
The MusKucluiRel's republicans are dis
cussing their late deftat.the Cannes which
led to It and the best policy to be pursued
to put the partv in better condition for fu.
turejcanipidsns. They generally recognl
that it was a serious defeat the loss of
governor, auditor and seven out
twelve congress. on and there Is a btrong
feeling that something radical must be
dDne, and great reforms Inaugurated, org
the party will become hopelessly and per
manently a minority one.
After thoroughly reviewing the sltua
tion, they have come to the conclusion that
their late defeat was due to the vote of the
young men who are.slipping away in great
numbers. This tendency has been marked
for some years past, a large and increa&In
majority of the new vott rs, these cominj
of age from election to election voting the
democratic ticket. Mure than this,
number of young men of republican par
entage have fallen away from that part
on account of its old fog v ism, among
whom may be noted the democratic gov
ernor, Russell, and Sherman Hoar, of the
new congressmen, a nephew of Senator
Hoar. The democracy of Massachusetts is
essentially a young man's party. Its
leaders ate young men, and its doctrines
and principles are those of to-day, for it
has cot far beyond the war issues. It Is
not to be wondered at that a party so situ
atcd should ha ye a wonderful attraction
for the younger voters, and that they
should join it by the thousands instead of
allying themselves with a fogy party living
on the Issues of a dead past.
The republicans at last recognize thii
fact. They see that they are at a standstill,
securing no recruits, and, if anything,
falling off, as the older voters pas away ;
whereas the democracy Is gaining strength
each year, and winning the support ot all
the younger men. They have already met
with serious defeat; they are likely to be
in a permanent, minority unless they take
some Bteps to secure the support of the
younger element.
Several propositions have been talked
about with the view of recalling those
who have slipped away and are still slip
ping away into the democratic ranks. One
of these propositions is to secure a larger
consideration for young men in the feder
al appointments; another to recognize the
republican state committee with the same
object In view, and another to establish i
Young Men's Republican Club, which
Indeed, was done last weeK.
10 these propositions, objections have
been raised by the older element, headi
by the Boston Advertiser, who insist that
the defeat last November was not so dis
astrous as to compel a resort to such ex
treme measures, and to take the control
of the party from the men who have led
ft for half acenturrv; and bv another ele
ment who a sert that the pians propo,
are not sufficient.and that the real purpose
Is not the mere desire to re.tore harmony
and strength to the party but rather to se
cure offices for certain favored Individuals
who would not otherwise get them.
That the Massachusetts republicans
have properly diagnosed the trouble is ad
mitted bv all, but the remedy proposed is
insufficient. The young men In Massachu.
setts have .left the republican party, but
not on the se!Hbh ground of a want of
recognition in the distribution of onsets
and In the control of the i.arty. Their
defection Is based on principle, on the fact
that the democratic platform is In accord
with the modem principles and ideas of
government, whereas, the republicans still
hang by the issues of a quarter of a century
ago. They refuse to be aroused bv war
issues, They see that the secession ques
tion has been thoroughly disposed of, and
has no re"l existerse to-day : they refuse
to accept the doctrine that the disturb
ance of the south by the passage of the
farce bill Is good policy; and they are all
revenue reformers opused to the princi
ples of the McKinley bill.
The colleges are educating them to the
economic Ideas of to-day , and as a result
nearly every graduate of Harvard, after
fctuding the platforms of the two parties,
becomes a democrat. Principles not ouVe.
have made the democracy the young men's
party of Massachusetts and left the repub
licans a party of fogies trying to live on
war issues. It Is not by irivlng the young
er voters a better share of the offices Hint
the Massachusetts republican ran expect I
to secure new life and strength to their I
party, but by changing Its platform and
policy. And the danger is a seilous one,
for the loss It has sustained is permanent
and likelv to grow worse every vear. It U I
now In a minority, and will remain so un
less It finds some way of winning back the
younger voters, or at least preventing fur
ther defections.
