A new enterprise has been siarted in Chi
cago for the purpose of transporting cattle from
the great ranches in (fyeming, Utah and
Mont at, a to Philadelphia, where immense ab
attoirs will be erected. It is intended that
this drerseil beef shall go to supply the Eu
ropean markets. It will cost less to ship live
cattle to Philadelphia and kill them there than
to kill them in the west and ship (he dressed
beef to New York and Europe.
Linn County hai 135 miles of railroad.
She is deeply interested in railroad manage
ment. If the railroad comission is to be
continued Linn should have a member on that
board. He should b. an active, energetic
quick-ughted man. Hon T J Iilackof Halscy
is just such a man. The legislature should
concede this much to Linn Caunty. Let Mr

A Fatal Aeclilent.
Oregon City, Jan, u. An accident
occurred this morning about io o'clock

wa struck by a limb or part of the tree

severe storm on the New England coast

points. At Birmingham, Conn., a freshet
in the Uousatomc river broke up the ice
and swept it over the medows and under

done and railroad communication inter
rupped. The Indiana Wenke nine

noon, however, the main camp of hostiles was
