fLAUKANTLY DISHONEST".
Tramp a man' corn and he will iquea'.
Touch a man's pocket and he will resent
It. Suggest a financial policy (or the
whole country as against the special Inter
ests of the gold bugs, and they quickly
squirm. The Oregonian replying to an
article wiltten by John P Robertson, fav
oring the increase of currency of tne coun
try savs that the motive ac the bottom of
the movement for" such Increase is " flag
rantly dishonest." That paver' position
ii, that If the currency be increased, the
purchasing power ot a dollar will De rela
tively decreastd. If this argument be
trne, (and we have uo disposition to con
rovert it,) then the reverse proposition Is
true, I. e, if the currency Is contracted, the
put chasing power of the dollar Is Increase cl
Then the necessary conclusion would be
that the motive at the bottcm of the move
ment to contract the currency would be
flagrantly dishonest." How many times
during the last twenty-five years has the
currency been contracted both by legisla
tive and administrative action. The motive
at the bottom of the matter was "flagrant
ly dishonest." Did the Orennian cry out
against such dishonesty? Not at all.
And why not? Simply because contiactlon
Is In the Interest of gold bugs and the gold
single standard, and the Ortfoman is, far
ece'.leuet, the promoter and defender o f
gold bugs and gold bugs Interests. Old
any one ever hear that paper protesting
against the "flagrantly dishonest" scheme
by which silver was demonetized in 1873
in consequence of which the circulating
medium of the country was contracted?
Certainly not. And why? Because con
tracting the silver circulating medium of
the country relatively Incieased the pur
chasing power of the gold dollar which
was a direct benefit to the gold bugs whose
organ it Is. It viewed with complacency
and satisfaction that state of things under
which the gold bug might make from one
to two dollars every time he manipulated
a $20 gold piece, for silver, after demone
tization, was at a discount of from 5 to 10
per cent. This' loss fell exclusively on
the poor for they handled only silver. To
this "flagrantly dishonest" means of cheat.
Ing the poor the Orrgoniatt entered no
protest, because Its lord and master, '.the
gold combination, was reaping a rich har
vest. Then, when the democratic partv
in congress came to the aid of the masses
against the "flagrantly dishonest" 6cheine
of the classes, by attempting to pass a bill
to remoneti.e silver, the Orconian,ea by
the gold hrg standards of the east joined
In to defeat the bill. It has been constant
in season and out of season in its efforts to
promote the scheme of contraction. Every
one knows that the continual Increase in
population and the Increase In the trade
and business of the country demands a
corresponding Increase in the currency
of the country. The Ortzonian under
stands this truth as well as any one, but
It would not cotiply with this demand
because the special interest which It repre
sents would be better promoted by con
traction.
