In a recent numbei of the Qrcgonian in
an article on Gen. McCook, that paper
gives Gen. Sheridan the credit of saving
Rose;rani army at the battle of Murfree-
boro; when any child wiio has ever studied
S lli-tory, knows that it was General
Geo. 11 Thomas . who commanded the
center corps of the army that stood like a
solid rock, and beat back the onslaughts of
Bragg's army, when McCook's corp was
driven from the field, I cannot account
for this falsification of history by the Ovt'
gotiittH in any other, way than from the
fact that Gen. Thomas was a southern
man and a democrat, for thpt paper certain
ly cannot plead ignorance to so notorious
a fact .
I do not remember t.tat Gen. Sheridan
was there; if he was, Jie was In a subordi
nate position for the three .corps of Rose
c nui's army were commanded by Generals
McCook, Thoma and Crittenden. Hav
ing oeen, under Gen. T homos, in '.al
memorable battles I do not like to see the
old man's honors confered upon another
and that too when that other does not need
them.

The mathematical fiei.d has recently, been
at work upon a calculation of the woik per
formed Ly the human heart, His calculations
are curious, and g've the work of the heart in
miles and beats. It Is based upon thepresump
tion that the heart beats sixty nine times each
minute, and throws blood nine feet. Comput
ed thus, the milenge of the blood through the
body might be taken as 207 yards per, minute
seven miles per hour, 16S miles per d?)v 61,
320 miles per year, or 4,292,400 miles a life'
time of seventy years.
A distinctive feature of inssjis of the
grass-hopper family is the manner in
which they produce sound. The sharp,
stridulating noise with which the air re
bounds all through the day and far into
lie midsummer night is produced by the
rubbing of the stiff edges o the wing
covers against the basal joint of the hind
most pair of legs; or, in some specks, bv
rubbing the edges of the wings against
each other.

Washington, ju;y 20. Friends of the

certain circles on the giotiml ihrit the .tpprt

A Man Found Dead,
HiLLsuoRO, Or , July 20 Last night this
town was suddenly thrown into a state of ex -citement
by ihe discovery of the body of a dead
man hanging in an empty room below the stage
of the cpera house. It was in a fearful state
of decomposition. The body was only about
three fourths erect, bei.ig suspended by a rope
used to elevate baggage to a dresing room of
th: stage. The nun who came to this melan
choly end was without any doubt Charles
Dupuis, a Krenchnan, whewe wlieren)ouis
