W tho Oregon State Weather Bureau,
co-operating with U. S. Signal Service,
Central Ollicc, Portland, Oregon, for
the week ending Saturday, May 10th,
J8!H):
The temperature rose again in forepart
of week and fell in latter part. Temper
atures of from 80 to 8S degrees, occurred
in all parts of the state. For the week it
lias iK'en above the normal. Frosts oc
curred in sections of Wasco, Sherman,
(iilliiun, Morrow, Crook, lirant, Harney,
Malheur, Lake and Klamath counties on
the 8th, 0th and 10th, doing damage to
vegetation and tender plants. . ltain fell
in the wheat districts of F.astern Oregon,
in Southern Oregon and along coast on
the 7th and 10th, doing great good to all
vegetation, except in sections of Wasco,
Sherman and Western tiilliam counties,
where, ns in the Willamette valley, the
rain was very light. In these latter sec
tions rain is badly needed. The morn
ings have leen more cool and cloudy, and
these features have helped crops along.
CKOWlXa VECiET.YTlOX.
Fall and early spring sown wheat are
growing finely. " l-ate spring w heat will
not germinate properly w ithout more
' rain. Oats, barley, rye and com are do
ing very well. Vegetables are becoming
verv plentiful, but foi all rain is needed,
especially in the Willamette valley fruit
prospects continue good, tirass is grow
ing nicely, the peach crop is the only one
that is now sure to be short. If the cod
lin moth is controlled.the apple and pear
crop will be good. From most every cor
respondent comes the desire for rain. In
Washington county, everything is grow
ing rapidly. Cu'. worms are injuring the
onion crop. In Clackamas county cher
ries and peaches promise large yields.
In Yamhill, the w heat crop will be good,
without more rain, and fruit will be
abundant. In Marion, the dry weather
is injuring the crops. Fruit will be
plentiful in Folk, wheat is doing fairly
well. Hop crop will be an average one.
In Linn, fall w heat looks fine. Spring
wheat is uncertain. Fruit plentiful ex
cept peaches. Gardens doing well. In
Benton, wheat on loose, moderately well
drained soil, growing well. On low un
drained land wheat has made but little
growth and needs rain. In Lane some
rain fell on the 10th, which was very
iK'iielicial, grass growing rapidly and
crops tine. In Douglas, rain of past ten
days has leen very beneficial. Crops
very ptomising In Jackson, farmers are
preparing to mow alfalfa, fruit has es
caped frosts and danger from them is now
past. All crops promising. In Wasco,
more rain badly needed, but crops prom
ising. Urass good. Kain on 10th, moist
ened soil 2 inches deep. In Sherman and
Gilliam crops doing well, stock fattening
up. In Morrow prospects were never
better for crops. Thunder on 7th. Rain
was very beneficial. In Umatilla and
Union the ruin was very beneticial. Crops
growing finely, excellent prospects. Fruit
plentiful. Iii Crook, Grant and interior
counties rain fell last week, frosts did
some damage. Hay and grain crops
tlattering and fruit will be very plentiful.
