Chairman E Goldsmith, of the democrat
ic state central committee, is not a whit
terrified by the cheerful and sweeping
claims of the republican managers as to
the outcome of the coming campaign.
Replying to a questioning reporter yester
day, he said :
"I believe that we shall elect most If not
all of our candidates un the state ticket,
ou. nominees for the legislature from this
county, and many of the county othcerr.
In this city many who never vote tor a
democrat will now vote for man v of the
candidates on our ticket. The merchants
and mechanics are almost solid for gov
ernor Pennoverand for others on our state
and county tickets.
"In the rural districts Goveruor Pinn
oyer will receive the solid democratic vote,
and large numbersof republicans will vote
for him, not for political reasons, but be
cause they are well pleased witn nis ad
ministration. They have watched it and
found it to be a clean and honest one, and
have always found their governor on the
side of the people on any and all questions
where the people's rights and the welfare
of the state were involved.
"Our only danger Is that our opponents
may make use of large amounts of money
with the floating and purchasable popula
tion. I have conndence, however, in the
better class of the people of this state, and
cannot bring myself to believe that the
purchasable vote of the sta'.e is large
enough to overcome a decisive majority of
the honest voters.
"Moreover, we shall not sleep In this
matter If we can bring home to anyone
bribery or the purchase of votes we will
make it exceedingly warm for the parties
concerned in it We are perfectly content
to leave the decklon to the legitimate
voters of the state, as they shall honestly
express bv their ballots, but do not propose
to allow the purchasable vote to decide it
it we can prevent it.

"My understanding of democratic doc
trine, and of our state platform, is that
there Is nothing of free trade except In ths

of Chenango county builciings, located at Pies-
ton, near Norwich, burned at midnight last
night, aud ten inmates, possibly more, were
burned. The buildings destroyed were the
asylum, in which were about eighty inmates.
