What a Kancheb Said. The Baker
City Keveille contains the following for
fact: "Never patronize a business
man to the extent of one dollar who is
afraid to advertise. Such business men
are a draw-tack to any village, city or
community, and for 'my part I shall
continue to pass them by. The above
came from the lips of a prominent and
quite wealthy randier ot tins vicinity
yesterday, and he spoke a very pretty
truth, for we never knew a business man
who absolutely refused to advertise, that
was generous enough to be Honest witn
his customers or could cope with com
petition.
A lady found a horse shoe, and
wishing for good luck, placed it under
ner pillow witn lier laise teetn. in tne
morning in the hurry of dressing she
stilistitttted the shoe 'for the teeth and
wore it for some time before the mistake
was discovered.
Our exchanges are penetrating the
alxive on some neighboring city, filling
in the blank with the city they wish to
advertise, and yet how riduculoue. Jokes
are all right ; but impossibilities can not
make them funny. Exaggerations some
times do.
THURSDAY AFTERNOON SESSION.
Mr Egan, of Marion countv, spoke as
follows: I believe the school aids can
be made practicable.
Sunt McF.lroy thinks one cheap school
aid is a good teacher.
School organization, bv Mr Kolierts. of
Silverton. He thinks the teacher in
opening the school in a neighliorhood
liotild visit the patrons prior to opening:
should find out what his predecessor has
done; stimiui nave ins work outlined. It
is hard to lind a school perfectly orgun-
izeu.

General discussion What are proper
incentives to study,".
I rot tamplvtl, of Monmouth, said:
Xo one method can Kssilly answer. We
need the broad, general methods.
Prof Gilbert, of Philomath, said a
pupil should be complimented on his
good work.
.Mr Longacre, ot Itnena ista, thinks
we don t need verv inauv incentives.
Mr Hitnsaker, of Marlon countv, said:
Let the teacher studv the mind of those
ilHiut him. He don't think a child
needs any incentive.
Mr Hickman said : Induce the pupil
to see the lieauty ot knowledge.
Mrs Williams, of Polk county, gave
some excellent ideas.
Mrs C C Lewis, of Marion county,

I suggests that the teacher should help
contribute. Mr McDonald has succeeded
111 getting a good library at Brownsville.
Supt Curl called for the expression of the
institute whether each district should
have a library. Said that he had cor
responded with parties who will furnish
liooks at 20 per cent discount. Profs
Wright and Baker insisted that teachers
should use good English in presence of
pupils in connection with their reading.
Prof Garland's lirst work was to get an
organ for school. Gives directions to pu
pils how to use libraries. Mr Russell
suggested that the program for holding
entertainment in literary societies and
Friday afternoon exercises. Mr Egan
works among the old people and gets a
leep interest in the work of entertain
ments.
Language J 1! Leathennan. of Wood-
burn schools, read a paper of marked abil
ity, commencing with early childhood
he traced a gradual development to per
fection. Technical grammar should be
laid aside until a considerable develop
ment of the pupil's mind is made. Child
ren should be taught to write letters to
intimate friends, rather than to write on
ohstrusive subjects. MissGodlev thought
teachers should commence teaching lan
guage when children are very voting. Mrs
thrall said every lesson should he u lan
guage lesson anil thought it a waste of
tune to have pupils print their lessons.
Mr Egan is 111 favor of printing. Mr
Wilkes is opposed to the "printing pro
cess and suggests dictation 111 script.
Miss Maxwell took a middle ground in
regard to printing a ml script w riting.
Miss Uittghhn uses a Usik of suggestive
pictures tor pupils. Mr Ixmgacre is 111
lavor 111 iirai-iiiug ciiiuireii 10 wriieiroin
the start.
The ladies were applauded bv Mr Bell
of the Compendium and Mr Baker, Supt
of Yamhill Co., for the active part taken
in the discussion.
Teachers preparation, bv Prof Walker,
principal of public schools.
Deficiency of organization and meth
ods were pointed out by Prof Walker,
and he showed clearly that a dally ,dry
routine 111 teaching is detrimental to the
best interests of the pupil. A due ap
preciation of the dignity of tho calling
of a teacher will contribute largely to
his success. A teacher must be in Bym-
fiathy with his pupils in onler to be in
tearty sympathy w ith his profession.
