A. short lime since my attention wa)
attracted to an inquiry in the Louisville
Courier-Journal as to the origin of the
popular phrase,"The Bloody Sliiit." The
answer given to the query ascribes it to the
recent period of reconstruction. Contrary
to the prevailing belief, this political
weapon was forged and effec'ively used
long before any differences had arisen be
tween certain portions of our Union, and
before, In fact , a union of states existed.
The Incident which gave the expression
.birth is to some extent legendary, and is
related by Sir Walter Scott in the preface
to his novel, "Rob Roy," and, briefly, Is.f
follows: The clan MacGregor possessed
lands and flocks which excited the cupidi
ty of tneir less fortunate neighbors, who, by
force and other methods, gradually de
spoiled them of their property an! drove
them from their homes. Ti.e clan, thus
impoveiishcd, resisted the encroachments
upon their rights, and, in the frequent
collisions that occurred, used every tern
porary advantage they gained, cruel ly e
r,ough. Their conduct, which was per
haps not unnatural under the circumstan
ces, was studiously represented at the cap
ital as arising from an innate and untam
able feiocity, for which the only remedy
was extermination.
These snggestions resulted in the pro
scription of the clan by act of the privy
council at Sterling, and permission was
given certain powerful chieftains to pursue
the MacGregjrs with fire and sword, and
all persons were prohibited f rc m af :o rding
them meat, drink or shelter. As might be
expected, civilization progressed very
slowly duilnj this period, and the Mac
Grsgors, feeling all the severity of the law,
and none of its protection, became wilder '.
and mi-- 'uv'.jss than ever. As the le
gend rr.c V ien of the clan MacGregor,
overtaken j. i.'jjht, asked shelter from a
dependent e Colquhouns, and, on be
ing refused, 1 ,-ired to an outhouse, seized
a wedder from the fold, and supped fru
gally off thecarcass.for which they offered
payment. The laird of Lus, hearing of
this enforced hospitality, caused the
offenders to be apprehended and sum
inarily executed.
To avenge this act the MacGregors as
tembled to the number of several hun
dred, and marched towaid Luss, Sir
Humphery Colquhoun received early no
tice of the raid, and assembled.an army of
superior numbers to mett them. A battle
took place in the valley of Glenfruin (Glen
of Sorrow) where, encouraged by the
prophecy of a seer, and aided by a superior
position and skillful generalship, the Mac
Gregor) were ictorlous, pursuing1 the
enemy furiously, and mercilessly slaugh
tering all who were unable to escape.
This battle and the f vtry of the proscribed
clan were reported to King James VI In a
manner most unlovorable to that unfortu
nate clan, and, mere strongly to lir.prcsi
that Impressionable monarch, the widows
of the slain to the numbcrol eleven score,
dressed in mourning riding on white pal
freys, and each bearing her husband's
bloody shirt upon the point of a spear,
uppearcd before the king at Sterling and
demanded vengeance upon those who had
made their homes desolate. Br act of
privy council A. D. 1613, the eld acts a
gainst the clan were revived, and others
of the greater seventy enacted. The
bloody shirt had unquestionably accom
plished its purpose. Scv York Tribune.
