A Fatal Fire,
Eureka, Cal.,Nov. 20. A fire occuned in
a hotel in Arcata.cight miles from here yester
day morning. George A Knight, of Neustad.
ter Bros., San Francisco, and Tohins ttornknil
were burned to death. Two ladies and sev
eral men were more or less injured or barned
by leaping from the hotel windows, The fire
originated in the hotel which was kept by Mrs
Waddle. Loss not less than $30,000. Insur
ance less than 85000-
Diphtheria.
Moorhead, Minn., Nov, So, A violent
epidemic of diphtheria is raging in thejvillages
ofMiJdleton and Georgetown. Sixty five
cases are now reported and a number of deaths
have resulted. Both towns are quarantined.
Becoming Alarmed, "
Paris, Nov. 20. A private telegram from
Lisbon states that there is great excitement
there over the Brazilian revolution, There is
renewal of the fears of a republican uprising.
The royal palace is guarded by troops for the
first time since the death of the late king,
The Portuguese minister, however, declares
that the change in Braiil will have no serious
effect in Portugal. The republicans are few
and the soldiers loyal.
Tke Nicaragua Canal,
Chicago, Nov. 20, C P Treat, a large
stockholder in the Nicaragua Canol Company,
who is now here says: "I have just received
news from Nicaragua, that the preparatory
work on the conal is being pushed as rapidly
as is possible. The first trouble with which
we met, is the difficulty in landing shigs at
Greytown. We are working with every en
ergy and are now building breakwater and
docks.
Stanley Aypreachlaf,
Berlin, Nov. 20. The Reichs Antciger
publishes a dispatch from Captain Weissman,
dated October I3,saying that four of Stanley's
soldiers and one of Emin's men had arrived
there. They ltft Stanley at Neukmma, Aug
ust 10, Emin and Casati had with them 300
Soudanese soldiers and a large number of
people conveying a great quantity of ivory.
Stanley was bringing 240 Zanzibars and six
lieutenants.
