Large deposits of ice, believed by ome
to be relict of the glacial period in this
country, havn been discovered in Idaho.
They are embedjed In earth and over
grown with moss, which has prevented
them from wasting a ay. It ia seriously
proposed to form companies to mine this
ice for sale in Western cities, where ice !
always scarce ancLdear. It might give the
users of this product some queer sensa
tions, to think they were cooling their
throats with Ice formed before even the
first human footfall was heard on this
planet.
In France they now use for steam and water
pipe joints, gaskets made of wood pulp, which
are boiled in linseed oil, They give satislac.
tory results, and are not subject to decomposi
tion at high temperature.

Salem, Or., Sept. 6 Manager Kochler, of
the Southern Pacific, came up on a special
train to-day and took a hack for Maclay, were
he met Receiver Scott and other officials of
the narrow gunge, and it is reported that the
Southern Pacific took control of the narrow
guage lines and that such wis the purpose of
me meeting.
Negro Troubles.
Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 6. Wednesday night
negro boy was lynched for rape at East Point,
near here.
The negroes held a mass meetiuu last ninht
to discuss the matter, and the whites, becoming
scared, sent for the Atlanta police, No trou
ble ensued, but after the officers returned to
the city a number of white men, whose injent-
ay, u ukiiu, unknown, went to dihrent
cabins and severly whiped fourteen negroes.

Deadly Lightning.
Macon, Ga., Sept. 6. There was a remark
able display of electric force in Southwest
Georgia this morning near Albany. H. II,
Kouse, jonn amvers ami J. w. Shisor were
instantly killed. They were on their way to
market with cotton, and sought refuge from
inc siiower unuer a tree.
An awful Disaster,
Antw erp, Sept. 6. Dynamite exploded to
day in a cartrige factory in the vaciuity of the
bourse, killing many persons and doing much
damage to property. Portions of the bourse
were struck by burning fragments and set ou
fire, causing a panic in the building, w hich was
crowded.
The latest estimate is that there are x
killed and 1000 wounded,

Seattle, W. T Sept. 6 John Nelson a
telephone !inemr.n, was climbing poles this
afternoon, with a wire in his hand, and when
about twentylive feet from the ground the line
became caossed with an electric power wire,
Nelson received a current which burned hia

ing to the ground.
