A Fowl Fire,
Helena, Aug. 14. The prairies a few
miles to the north and northeast of Miles City
are on fire. The area covers several thousand
seres, The bodies of timber on the north and
outh of the town are separate from each other
j but seem to have caught fire simultaneously.

apnroached near the ranch of George Rhode,
but the occupants managed to ward them oil.
Another Creamery Collapsing,
Union, Or.,Aug. 14. The creamery at La
Grand is in trouble, and will probably suspend,
The builders, Davis & Rankin, have commen
ced suit to foreclose the lien and recover the
balance due for constructing the creamery.
There are thirty seven defendants.
Sensible Yakima.
North Yakima, W T Aug. 14, The
city council on Tuesday night purchased a
Clapp & Jones No 3 steam engine for a new
lire department, also 3000 reel ot No 1 hose,
and authorized the city marshal to receive bids
for the construction of five large cisterns, to be
located centrally in the business portion of the
city, each with a capacity of 25,000 gallons.
A Stalfblng Case.
Salem, Aug. 14 This morning A W Mize
cut and stabbed with a pocket knife a young
man named Matthews, five miles south of the
city. Matthews and a younger brother became
involved in a quarrel with Mize, and a fight
ensued, Matthews knocked him down and
was choking him, He cried enough, and was
released, when he drew a pocket knife and
slashed aw.ty. The wounds are not serious.
Mize has been a prominent shool teacher for
some years. No arrest has yet been made,

Seattle, Aug. 14. Karl Jemer, s turner,
"Bed 45, recently from California, committed
suicide this afternoon in a lodging house by
