phia. 1 hear they are a good firm to deal
with." So Mr Burke took the train to
Philadelphia. He bought a nice line of
goods for his Austin store and made ar
rangements fur a continuance of the friend
ly relations thus begun. On 'leaving the
'.ore he said to Mr Robt Ogden, the busi
ness manager : "By the way, Mr Ogden,
I am a candidate for the Internal revenue
collectorshlp at Austin, and as I am en my
way to Washington Pd like to make the
acquaintance of Mr Wanamaker, '.he Postmaster-General."
"Certainly," was Mr
Oeden'a prompt respnte,and he sat down
and wrote a letter to his chief,warmly com
mending Mr Burke as a man and mer
chant. Burko tame to Washington with
the letter, presented it to Wanamaker, and
in a few minutes was on hit way to the
office of the Secretary of the Treasury with
a letter of introduction from Mr Wana
maker in his pocket. Though the Post
master General had never seen Burke be
fore, and knew nothing about him, except
what his manager,Mr Ogden, had written,
he commended Burke to Secretary Win
dom as a moral and religious gentleman,a
high toned merchant and worthy republi
can. That was on Friday. The next day
Burke's appointment was announced attha
White House. To say that the Texas re
publicans, who relate this interesting story,
are indignant at the good merchant from
Philadelphia, would be a mild statement of
the case.
TOO KlblCDLOUS.
In times of public calamity, it is not in
good taste to make prominent the ludi
crous matters that almost uniformly at
tend such calamities, and for this reason
the Democrat forbore to call attention to
the ridiculousness of the so-called Railroad
Commission coming promptly forward to
tske cognisance of the wrecking of the
Southern Pacific train at the Lebanon
junction. We say "take cognizance" ad
visedly, for that was all the commission
could do. They eould come and look at
the wrecked trainjuid examine the switch
just as any private citizen could do "only
this and nothing more." They could sug
gest that th great board in its wisdom
was of the opinion that a great crime had
been committed, just as private citizens
cauld and did do. But beyond this they
could do nothing more,except to draw their
salary when the quarter is up. This board
Is a regular sham so far as being able to do
anything for the benefit of the state. It
was amusing to see the pompous air ith
which Colvlg and Faull strode our streets,
accompanied by Geo. Wagconer, who
added much to the laughable features ?i

felt in holding the office of -'clerk." Colvig
and Faull arc the two republican it embers
of the board, but CIjw, the democrotlc
member, failed to put in an appearance. It
ts said that he so keenly fee's the rldicu
lounness of the farce of traveling ovr the
country leaking after railroads without any
power at all to exercise, and all at the ex
pense of the people.that his sense of shame
kept him at home. He must hare known
how unpopular the whole farce ts in Liin
county . This railroad commission is only
one of the heritages left the people by the
late legislature. May we never see such a
leglslatare again.
Thomas C Piatt was Interviewed In De
troit just previous to his departure for
Alaska,and on being pressed to express his
personal opinion of Ben Harrison declined
tod so, but consented to express what he
silled the personal opinion of a prominent
republican In New York. This opinion
was to the effect thaf'the Almighty's ovi r
coat wouldn't make a vest fwr Mr Harrl-s-jn."
It is rather a picturesque way of
describing what these republican regard
as Mr Harrison's egotism, and it may be
interesting to note that the opinion as here
formulated by Mr Piatt was originally ox
pressed by Stephen 0 Elklns. After Mi
Piatt has been in Alaska, by the way, for a
little time, he tiny be able to meet a dis
tinguished fellow republican there In the
person of Chauncey M Depew. Vr De
pew says that he is certainly going to take
a trip up in that direction if he can arrange
It. The only thing he Is afraid of Is that
he will be called upon for so many speeches
that the attendant exertion and nervous
exhaustion will nullify the benefits he is
sure than otherwise he veuld derive from
the trip.

respectable republican in the state with shame,
The broken down hacks of the party, those who
are out of favor with th party in general, seem
to be the ones selected by Mitchell and Dolpth
for place pelf and power, The man wko sold
his political influence to his enemy for a cold
mess of pottage, others who are known to be
habitues f the lowest dives stand the best
chance of getting appointments in Oregon under
Harrison. No wonder the rumblings of a politi
cal volcano are heard on all sides among the
better class of republicans.
