The eccentric George Law, of New
York, who gave valuable diamonds last
year to all the spordng characters of Sara
toga, has lately distinguished himself again
by losing $82,000 at faro in a Long Branch

Mrs John A Logan is home from her
jaunt in Europe. She brings a ruddy color
from the sea. When she landed on Friday
she wore a close fitting costume of black.
Her hair It snowy white, and was brushed
straight up from her forehead and tucked
beneath the white silk border of a black
bonnet. On her bosom she wore the large
black locket, exposing the portrait of Gen
eral Logan that she always wears. "I was
rery much disappointed," she said, "jtith
the small showing America made at the
Paris (position." "Are there many Amer
icans in England ?" "Why, I felt quite at
home among the very many ol my coun
trymen I found there. Americans are very
much in vogue in England now. They are
quite the fashion, and are treated in the
most whole hearted and hospitable way in
the world. All over Europe Americans
get the most flattering attentions."
Not long after the war a circus came to
Montgomery, Alabama. It was the first
circus that had been there in a long timo
and attracted an Immense crowd,cspecially
of the negroes. The most interesting
feature of the entertainment was the bal
loon ascension. The negroes had never
seen anything of that kind, and regarded
the spectacle of a man sailing up into the
clouds very much as they would have
looked upon Elijah going up in his chariot
of lire. The balloon sailed away eight or
ten miles and eame down In a field where
some negroes were ploughing. Terrified
at the spectacle of a chariot coming down
from heavea they verily believed that the
last great aay had come.and remembering
all their shortcomings, fled away In terror
at the approach of the awful judge. One
gray headed and rheumatic old negro was
unable to et away. He could follow the
plough, but could not run, and the chariot
came down upon him with terrible swift
ness. In that awful moment his whole life
rushed upon him, he thought of all the
petty sins he had csmmitted, and the ghosts
of a hundred chickens seemed to rise up in
judgment against him. But in that des
perate emergency his mind did not desert
him, and remembering that politeness al
ways counted with his earthly master he
quickly decided to greet the Lord of heav
en and earth in becoming style. As the
aeronaut touched the earth and began to
untangle himself from the meshes about
his car the old darkey, w ith an air nf pro
found obeisance, removed the wool hat
from hit shiny pate, bowed low and said
with pious unction : "Mornin' Mart Je
tut, how you lP your pa ?"

The war against the Jewt at fathionable
resorts has been revived at Coney Island,
where the Brighton Beach hotel hat posi
tlvely excluded the Hebrew. It It a mott
tentcless and unreasonable discrimination
based on a prejudice which the world ought
to have grown ashamed of long before
this. Hotel keepers have the undoubted
right to exclude undesirable guests, but
race distinction is of all disciiminationt the
most odiout. Imagine the fastidious
Brighton beach people refusing accommo
dations to a man of the learning and breed
