Must Kekp Olr Kves l)rnx. Any
railroad project with a view to connecting
Astoria with the Southern Pacific's line of
railroads must necessarily suggest Albany
as the junction point. At the same time
other things are possible. The road might
I lie extended from Corvallis to Junction
and a junction made farther north. The
.Situation behooves Albany to at least be on
the outlook. - If the S P takct hold of the
matter it wiil eo with n rush, and when it
dues eo it will mean a creat deal for West
rn ( regon. There are indications that
the time will come when vessels will De
laden at Astoria ins'cad of at Portland,
and it will be an important matter to be on
the line of road that leads to the former
ritr. Being at the junction of the Oregon
Pacific, also destined to be a transconti
nental line, Albany now has an advantage
for the junctionshipot the Astoria road that
t must not lose signt ot.
Don't Sell It. The question of selling
Albany's hand engine is one that may
come up before the city council at some
future meeting; but we predict the council
will not order it sold. There 1 a strong
feeling here among old citizens particular
ly to keep it. It has done much good
work for the city of Albany and should not
be disposed of. It is in good condition
now, and only needs men to man it to be
first to get water on the flames that would
destroy It has saved serious fires un-
numbered In Albany by its timely action I
and can continue to do so. No steamer
can get water as quickly. Mr M E Brink,
secretary oi me Hoard oi lire delegates, will
make a canvass for a company to man it
and should succeed. Let it be used to do
its work as in the past a' the beginning of
a fire and then retire and let the steamers
do the work. When water is r.ecded most
is at the beginning of a fire and the old en
gine has always been to the front, and with
men to run it will be in the future.. Don't
sell it. If the city needs hose let it buy it
in some other way.
A Goon Rkpl'Tation. No Insurance
Company in Oregon is run in a moie care
ful, conservative manner than the Albany
Company. Its business is increasing and it
is becoming more solid every month. It is
managed by an insurance man and its pros
pects are now remarkably flattering. The
recent Seattle lire has brought up the
statusof insurance companies in a strong
nanucr, and it is a nntterof local pride to
know that the Albany Company gets
;;ood reputation. It is a greater institution
tr our city than many appreciate. Willi
mnual receipts this year tha. will probably
reach Spyo.ooo to 5ioo,coo its importance
anreadilv be appreciated. In lliese times
of biz fires it is pleasing to know that no
uino hazxard business is done, but a safe.
onservativc course is taken.

Bet Yoi r Boots. Pipes, of the Ben
ton Leader while In Albany the other day
witnessed a marriage at the Revere House,
and gives the following graphic account of
)t. "The happy couple were from some
rural district in Linn county. While the
bridt was making her wedding toilet the
poor Impatient groom kept pacing up and
down the hall repeating these words o'er
and o'er, "I wonder if she is dressed f I
am awful anxious to see her." About two
hours after the appointed hour the bride
made her appearance, and joined the ex
pectant groom, and they immediately took
their places on the floor, to be made man
and wife. Just as the lustice was about to
proceed with the cereinonv, the eroom
concluded that he was on the wrong side
of the lady, and went around on the other
side, whereupon the Justice told him to get
oacK on tne oilier side. Afier the cere
mony was over they were seated, and the
young husband ta break the silence, asked
the bride if she was glad that she was mar
