thorpc Co will play in Albany next week
it popular prices, and popular plays. The
Ashland Tiiliitgs says: "The Georgie
Woodthorpc company has been playing to
good houses in Aihland, and giving ex
cellent satisfaction. '''he play of the
"Golden Giant" was enjoyed as much as
any drama ever presented here, and "May
lilossom," Wednesday evening, is highly
praised upon all hands. TV night the
company give "M'Liss," the dramatization
of Bret llarte's famous California story."
The reunion of the Alumni at the ft.
Charles Hotel last evening was one of the
brlgntest affairs in their history. The sup
per served was an elegant and sumptuous
one, universally pronounced a sood com
panion to the fine literary treats of the
week. After its service a season f toasts
and speeches was indulged in. President
Condit answered to "The Albany College."
Mr Jas I- Powell, President of the Alumni
welcomed the new class in eloquent terms
and was happily responded to by Miss
Helen Crawford. An Alumni paper
by Miss Lillie Robertson was read, a nice
tribute being paid to Mr. Stephen I'llnn

Pacific, is now looked for at this city on
next Monday morning, when ail early re
sumption of work is anticipated. The en
gineers who have been making estimates
of work completed to Brcitcnbiish return
ed on last evening's train. Already prep
arations arc being made by an additional
gang of Celestials so that construction
trains can go to the extreme eastern limit
ef the track.

o'clock and evening at 7 o'clock.

men say that hop growers should not be
in a hurry to contract their crops. It is
reported that feast has badly damaged the
crop in New York and it is thought they
will command a good price this fail. It is
said that several buyers are in the valley
now trying to contract for this year's crop.

The Central Association of the Baptist
Church begins its regular annual session
with the First Baptist Church of this place,
Thursday, the 13th.
Thursday, the 6th Inst., all the live s'ock
and farming implements of Thomas Kay
were sold at public sale at his farm one
half mile from htre. One of his Holstein
cows and tier spring calf brought $200.
Prof. J. B. Horner and Wife of Rose
burg, were here last Friday. No one holds
a larger place in the hearts of people here
than Prof, and Mis. Horner. His many
friends throughout this county tre pleased
to know ef his continued success in the
profession of which he is a most thorough
master. We bid them come again and
stay longer.
Messrs. Weber Bros , lessees of Thos.
Kay's farm took a couple of loads of oats
to Albany I ussday for which they receiv
ed 43 cents per bushel. The bovs for
tuuately sold these oats there last winter
hen prices were better than now.
Prof. R. Micheal, cf the Weston Nor
mal school is visiting his mother and
friends here.
Hon. W. Carey Johnson, of Oregon City
has accepted an invitation to deliver the
oration here on the glorious 4th.
Messrs. Wolpert and Engert sold their
farm near here to F. M. Powell, Saturday.

bought this farm of II. Bryant, of your
city a short time ago, we understand pay

back to the land of irrasshcppe-s, cyclones,
etc., whence thev came. Thev have been
here six weeks and said they did not like

Prof. Garland and wife, of Wilbur, have
been retained at a salary of $150 per
month to teach our public school. Yhe
Prof, has been principal of the Wilbur
Academy for the past two years and comes
ery highly recommended.
The foundation for ur new school house
has been laid and work will be pushed to
the early completion of the house. By
the time for commencing the fall term of
school we will have a school building of
which any city might well feel proud
Saturday evening a meeting of the citi-
ens of thi6 place was held to devise means
and to take the initial step toward open
ing a trail along the Calipooia to 'lie min
ing district of the Calipooia and Blue
River. The work will be done under thi
eupervision of Hon. J. W. Swank and Geo,
I, Overton.
A meeting was held in the City Hall
Tuesdav evening for the purpose of organ
izing a Company for placing water work
in or adjacent to ourcitv. We here hav
wonderful natural advantages for having
a perfect system of water works and it is
to be hoped our citizens will take right
hld and establish the same forthwith.
Dr. R. II. Curl and family arrived horn
Saturdry after an extended sojourn in
Eastern Oregon.
The dyer for the Eagle Woolen Mills
Company arrived Saturday, and work was
begun in that department ot the mills Mon
day. The travel hither is continually on
the increase. Strange faces are beginning
to be numerous, and property is changing
hands more frequently. Coshow & Sons
made two sales Mondav, and others are on
the way.
R. G. Cochran through his agents sold
his Albany piopertv realizing the neat lit
tle profit of $2o:, within two months on a
$650 investment. He Immediately rein
vested in propel ty here, buying the resi
dence of Or. Starr, paying $750 for the
time.
Mrs. Turner's farm r.ear Crawfordsvilie
consisting of 520 acres was sold . by our
real estate agents to a Mr. Kussel. Con
sideration, $3600. Still there is room for
more.
Since our last writing the Narrow
Gauge look another start and managed to
make a round trip everv two days. Mon
day they started trains from both ends
the dawn train however met with a mis
hap the other side of Silvcrton. The en
gine in trying to perforin some gymnastic
made a false step and fell on its hack.
The south bound train came up as far as
Scio and its engine went back to pull its
comrade out of the ditch.

The people of Mill Citv are verv much
pleased with Mr for extending his
stage route from Mehama to this place.
We now have a daily conveyance Detween
here and Albany and Salem. He will
leave Mill City at 5 o'clock In the morn

Mr A P Miller, of Plymouth, Ind, came
to Mill City Wednesday, and thinks of
staving here for some time. Mill Citv Is
known in the east and the fact that it is an
enterprising town, yet in its infancy, is also
known.
Al Cairell and his dog Berry are to be
nulled. A few weeks ago Berry was nop
ping around on three legs, his fonith one
being accidently stepped upon and was
near.ly broke. Now Al is hopping around
on one leg, his second one having received
an uglv gash right above the Instep with n
chisel.' Berry is all right again and Al is
getting there slowly.
Mr J R Abhev, superintendent of tele
graph of the O P, was here and at Gates
ville last Friday.
Mike Houan. took his gang of China
men below Lyons where he Is clearing a

Mr C C Goddard, who went to Huh
bardslon, Mich , about eight weeks ago,
came back to Mill Cl'y last Sunday even
