well is a point where four roads meet.
Nature smiles on the spot, but it marks a
uniquely cruel episode in the history of
the Jsew England colonists. In 1752 Ann
Conner committed suicide in the old town
of Brunswick. In accordance withtheold
blue laws she w as buried at this place of
th; meeting of the four roads, with a stake
flriven through her body. This is said to
hive been the only instance ir. w hich this
'.) law was put into execution in this

Justice and Mrs Lamar will go South
"While the former makes his circuit, and

f.r a short stay. Justice Lamar has not
iMen abroad for many years, and now that
h's favorite daughter-in-law, the wife of
his son Louiswiil reside in Paris nextyear,
hi is more than anxious to make her a
visit. Mrs Lamar, jr., has been a diligent
student, and her success in portrait paint
ing already warrants the high hopes that
have been expressed of her career under
competent instructors abroad.
Asparagus is just now being imported
into England in large quantities from Tou
louse and the north of Spain. The bun
dles are packed in wooden crates and, con
sidering the transshipments en route,reach
Covent Garden in excellent condition.
Spain is also sending large quantities of
tomatoes to the London markets. Last
year as many as thirty vessels were en
gaged in transporting 'he f ttiit,and this year
it is expected that larger quantities still
will be sent. The profit yielded last year
was often 100 per cent. The Spanish spec
imens, though cheap, are only tit for cook
ing, being very ugly in shape and color.
Robert Browning goesout agreatdtal

for dinners. He is short and stout with
white hair and a glow of ruddy health, ile
wears his hair quite long and has a mus
tache and goatee. He enjoys the best of
health and hss an almost boyish flow of
animal spirits and enthusiasm. Society is
his life and he is always en evidence. He
dines out nearly every night and loves balls
and receptions. Most agreeable in conver
sation, of course he is well posted on every
subject and his friends number the great
men of the entire world. He is a great
flirt and very proud of his conquests. Of
course all bow down to the Brownipg
name, one of the grandest in literature,
much sought after by all classes of society.
His presence is thought to put a most
learned and distinguished stamp on any
reunion.
The law offices of Mr Bayard in the old
family homestead, at Ninth and Market
streets, Wilmington, are being refitted and
put in condition for early occupancy .Young
Tom, who comes from Yale in a short time,
will share the offices,and under his father's
tutelage will equip himself for the practice
of law. There is no doubt that Mr Bayard
will refrain from entering public life again.
He has expressed himself to friends as
being heartily tired of public affairs and
of desiring to pass the rest of his years in
the quietness of his home, with his family
and his books, devoting his energies to the
practice of law and the training of his two
younger sons for the same profession. In
young Tom the hopes of the family proba
bly rest. He is the exact counterpart of
his father, a shade taller perha,is, with
broad shoulders a picture of tine young
manhood. He is open and frank in man
ner and immensely popular with those of
his own years. .Pliilip.thc youngest of the
family, is likewise a youth o! fine promise.
Miss Carrie J Bartlett,hc first woman to
OCC-ipy a pulpit in Dakota, and who has been

C lurch, ol S. Dak., has recently accepted a
Ca'l to the Unitarian Church at Kalamazoo,
Mich. Miss Bartlett, who was for about
tTJ vea s a member of the Minneapolis
Tribune staff.ar.d is well known. She re
signed her charge in Sioux Falls a short
time ago and will be the first woman to
occupy a pulpit in the state to which she
goes. Miss liartlett was born at Hudson,
Wis., and wai educated at the college at
Carthage, Ill.,receiving the degree of A. B.
in 1S79 and carrying off the valedictory
honors of her class. She spent the next
year in special study and later was honor
ed with the degree of A. M. She taught
a year as Principal of the schools at Mon
trose, la., and was then, on account of an
Injury received, an invalid for two years.
The last six months of this period were
spent on a claim near Kllendale, In Dako
ta. So beneficial was the wonderful Da
kota ozsne, breathed constantly because of
a life spent mainly out at doors, that the
broken dawn young woman grew well and
strong. About this time she sought and
obtained employment on the Minneapolis
Tribune and remained with the paper two
years. Her work, whatever it was, was
done thoroughly and well.

Just like a man! Nov. 26, 1S64, Mrs
Hodges, of St Louis, mailed a letter to her
husband, who was with Sherman's army.
On reaching his regiment the letter was
given to Capt Bixby, to be delivered to Mr
Hodges. The captain naturally put it in
his pocket. Two weeks ago he found it in
the same pocket of the same coat, yellow
and dingy with twenty-five years' incar
ceration, but otherwise all right. He im
mediately mailed it, and Mr Hodges receiv
ed it in St l.ouis, the city from which it
originally started. The news was a ILtle
old, but the family enjoyed reading it.
