gelatine lose its power of "setting," or gcl-antinizing.
It has been decided by the pension de
partment that a soldier about to be mus
tered out, who was slightly Injured in the
leg by an empty demijohn, which was be
ing playfully tossed about the camp, is en
titled to a pension.'. This would seem to
mean that all soldiers hit by demijohns,
whether full or empty, are also entitled to
pensions ; nnd that no distinction can be
made on "the roll 'of honor' " between a
soldier hit by a bullet in front of the ene
my and one hit by a demijohn in front of
friends. Messrs Bussey and Tar.ner would
have the law regard both as battle scarred
veterans equally deserving of the govern
ment bounty. This is what a surplus rev
enue can do in the way of upsetting the
official mind,

linen by washing in rainwater and soap.
If the belled potatoes are done a little too
soon, lay a towel over the kettle or dish,
but do not put a tight cover over them.
Paint on windows can, it it said, be re
moved by melting some soda in very hot
water, and washing them with it, using a
soft flannel.
Let the table. when no one is present but
the home circle, be the model of what it
thould be when surrounded by guests.
When potters' ware is boiled for the
purpose of hardening it, a handful or two
of bran should be thrown into the water,
and the glaing will never be injured by
acids or salt.
There is nothing better for nervousness
than celery tea. the tops or roots, or even
the seed, and in draining the water from
cooked celery you lose the best part.

be kept open to admit air, and entirely free
from dust and grease. The wick should
be trimmed very evenly.
Make starch with soapy water, and you
will find it a pleasure to do tip your starch

nicely. Change the water when it becomes
