Scio, Jan. 14th, 1S89 Editors Democrat : Now that the Legislature Is in session it would be well for its members to bear in mind that there are some things that should be done and some that should not be done The mortgage tax law should not be re pealed. The state should not buy the leeks at Oregon City. The people should protest against sending J. N. Doiph to the U. S. Senate again, as he has fully Identi fied himself with railroad and other mono polies. I do not believe the assessment law is just right. Let it be amended so as 10 permit indebtedness to the amount of $3000 to be deducted from each taxpayers assessment and no more. This would to a large extent do away with the very preva lent practice of creatine temporary indent edness to meet the Assessor with. A. F. Beard. A curious story is related from Madrid in explanation of the misfortunes which have lately afflicted the royal house of opain. ji appears that the root of the mis chief is a fatal ring of quite medieval dead llness. The late Kine Alphonso XII aave It to his cousin Mercedes when he was be trothed to her, and she wore It durlnir the whole of her short married life. On her death the King presented it to his grand- motner, tne (Jucen Christina. She died very soon after.when It DassrH to thr v.-n-. aister.the Infanta del Pilar.wha at i t.. gan to sicken and in a few days breathed her last. Alphonso then handed it to hi. aister-in law, Christina, the youngest aaugnier ot tne Uuke of Montpensier, but in three months she was also dead. His Majesty now resolved to retain the baleful jewel in his own keeping, but he, too, soon fell a victim to its mysterious malignancy. By order of his widow it has now been suspended by a chain around the neck of the statue of the Maid of Almudena, the patron saint of Madrid. KEEP POSTED. Wheat, "0 cants. New fall goods at Read's.
