Satur day J. W. Guptill sent 3000 choice trees to Boston to fill an order, but that shipment will form but a small part of the sum total. The trees come from different sections of the state,many being cut in the vicinity of South Faris. Maine Christmas trees will be sent to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and orders have come very freely from the West. The collections of internal revenue dur ing the first five months of the fiscal year ending June 30th, 1SS9, amounted to $53, 091,736, an increase of $i,336,iS6 over the collections during, the corresponding period of last year. The receipts from spirits were $29,306,364 j from tobacco, $12,965,- S10 ; from fermented liquors, $10,46.,, 5S3 ; from oleomargarine, $316,653 ; from banks and bankers, $5,717 ; from miscellaneous sources, $34, 60S. The receipts for Novem ber last were $107,411 greater than those for November, 1SS7. In 1792 the postage for a single letter in this country was twenty-five cents for distance of more than 450 miles. Now the rate is two cents for 3000 miles or less.The people now demand one cent postage. The deficiency in the postoffice revenues for lSSSare less than half of what it was In 18S5, shewing wonderful increase In busi ness. We have in this country 57,37 Pos1, offices. The American mails car ried last year 3,576,100,000 pieces, letters, papers and packages ; the British carried 2,279,522,000; the German, t, 8 16,066,000 the French, 163,249,000. The average number of pieces carried for every inhabi tant of the United States was 71 ; of Great Britain, 61 ; of Germany, 41 ; of France, 37. The postal expenditure last year in America was $55,795,35S ; in Germany, $44,348,939 ; in Great Britain,$28,S76,235 in France,$28,327,666. In all these figures the telegraph service of foreign nations has been omitted. Our letter and postal card rates are the same as those of Great Bri tain, and cheaper than those of Germany or France.
