capital to opress the great mass of the peo
ple, know little of the temper of the coun
try and less about the political revolutions
which nowcome swiftly to punish con
tempt for the popular will.
The imperative necessity of to-eay is to
cheapen the products of our industry with
out cheapening the wages of labor, by
greatly cheapened raw materials for our
mills and workingmen. That is the lirst
step toward cheapening the nccessrries of
life ; and if political leaders of the successful
party are wise, they will take a prompt de
parture against monoply control of prices
and in favor of cheaper products.
Above all, let those interested make
haste slowly in Increasing the burdens of
consumers. There is no country of the
wolrd that taxes Its labor so oppressively as
does our own, and the greed decentralized
capital is to day the gravest peril to the

his death to-day near Kamela, on the Blue
Mountains, under circumstances peculiarly
sad. He had stated out on his last trip prior
to promotion to a passenger train, and had

A Big Offer.
San Francisco, Dec. 14. It is stated
here that Capt. John Howard,of theschoon
Rossario, has telegraphed East to the
stockholders there that he would bring the
Yaquina Bay vessel safely into this port
for $60,000. Most people think this offer is
absurd, as if she could be floated, the sum
is too large a one for the job. The Ya
quina Bay was worth $'75,ooo.
