Tacoma, W. T.,Dec. 12. Col.J.C Hain
es arrived In the city from Auburn, N. Y.,
this morning. He was met at the depot by
Capt. W. Fife and other members of the
Tacoma Guards, and escorted to the Taco
ma, where received, until late this after,
noon the congratulations of numerous
friends here, it will be remembered that
Col. Haines was recently acquitted of a
charge of conspiracy in the Gardner smug
gling case, and it is for this reason he was
given such a reception here.

says a canvass of the senate has been made
in regard to the passage of the river and
harbor bill at thij ses.ion, and that a Targe
majority of the senators are in favor of
passing such bill.

San Bernardino, Dec. 12. The board
of city trustees has passed an ordinance
raising the city liquor license from $10 a
month to $5o, closing saloons at midnight,
ezacting heavy bonds from keepers of
saloons,and providing for forfeiture of bonds
and license if there is disorder on the prem
ises, gambling or other violation of the or
dinance. Firet Snow of the Season,
St. Pail, Dec. 12. Reports from var
ious parts of Minnesota and Dakota say
that the first snowfall of the season was
that of to day, which amounted to from

Oswego, N. Y, Dec. 12. During Mrs,
Langtry's performance here to-night,inthe
academy of music, as the curtain was about
to rise on the last act, there was a cry of
fire from the rear of the hall, and thick
clouds of smoke poured up through the
large register in the middle aisle. A crack
ling of dames was heard underneath the
floor, and the large audience were panic
stricken. Cool headed men sprang upon
the stage and called out to the people that
there was no danger Others mounted
their chairs in every part of the house and
called upon the people to remain cool.This
succeeded in partially quieting the people,
and in two minutes the theater was cleared
just as the flames sprung up through the
floor.

Seattle, Dec. 12, Superintendent
Watkins has 500 men at work flooding the
Franklin mine, which ignltted yesterday
from fire from the engine. Nineteen hun
dred feet of hose was taken from here this
morning to assist in extinguishing the fire.
It Is thought, here, that the conflagration
can be quonched In a short time, though
