Schoolmaster Statesmen.
During- the present campaign
we have heard a great deal about
the schoolmaster in politics, many
ol the west informed citizens con
tending that the schoolmaster is
invariably impractical and for that
reason unfitted for an administra
tive office.
It is significant that both of th
leading candidates for the demo
cratic nomination for President
are ex-schoolmasters. Governor
Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey
and Speaker Champ Clark of Mis
souri have both served as presi
dents of institutions of learning
and both have demonstrated tn
the world that intellectual men are
not necessarily failures in the
great game of politics.
Governor Wilson has dem.-'-strated
to the people of New Jer
sey that he is of an exceedingly
practical turn of mind, haung.
forced the enactment of more
genuine progressive legislation
during his two years tenure of of
fice than has been placed on the
statute books of that slate by any
of his predecessors.
Speaker Clark has also proved
himself a constructive statesman
as well as a schoolmaster. His
leadership of (lie majority mem
bers of congress lias never been
equaled. The record made by the
democralie members of that body
irudcr the leadership of Clark and
the record made by the New Jer
sey Governor effectually proves
the fallacy of the claim the school
master is unfitted for leadership.
If the writer were permitted to

President, we should unhesitat

of Wisconsin.
A born lighter, inherently lion
est ami endowed with unusual
menial vigor, .a Fulletle would
in our judgment, make an ideal
candidate.
Unlike Uoosevelt, he has al
ways been consistent. I le has not
only preached progressive repub
licanism but has invariably prac
ticed it in his own state of Wis
consin, lie has never wavered
from llie course of plain duty, or
compromised with the special in
terests to advance his own politi
cal fortunes.
If our republican friends would
nominate a genuine progressive.
Iliev need look no further than the
state of Wisconsin.

public funds is not a popular, slo
gan witji the gentlemen who deal

payer is registering no serious
complaint against the economy
