"Well sir, that's she inicstion that's most agitating the llig 'lop highbrows at the present tunc, fo begin with, he drinks seven liillars worth of distilled water every lay, and. adde dlo that. five, ram ..f Borden's Eagle Brand. "Now, I am told bv married fnlks (I'm a bachelor myself, vou know) that one can will last a habv and kren nun m condition so that he can sipiall the roof off, for, live days. I don't snow whether that dope is alright or nut, but 1 do know that the babv lephaiit gets away with six cans every twenty-four hours. Now, let's see, that s enough to keen six human babies alive and kicking for nearly a week, and vou can ligurc out ior yourself just about how much it's go ing lo cost to raise him till he's a year old. 'Of course, by this time I suppose everyone knows that he was bom at Salinas, Cal on Thursday, April the 25th, and we placed him on exhibi tion at Oakland the following Mon day. Thriller? My dear sir, he's a perfect riot. At every alternooii s performance we have him pushed around the hippodrome track in a glass cage. His mother pushes the cage. He's a sturdy little chap now and you should see hini playing wilh Iwo big footballs that the boys of the circus bought for him. At the nine of his birth his mother refused to own hint, and, in fact, en deavored to kill him. so we had to take li i til away from her. He js beiiiK raised entirely by baud and just now bids fair t ogrow up and be as husky as any member o the herd. "When born he weighed ISO pounds, was 26 inches high, 3 feet long, and his trunk' measured 10 inch es, lie is the olily elephant ever bred .mil bom in this country, which really presents one of the most remarkable cases known lo naturalists. "ltaby Hutch, for that's his name, will be exhibited when our circus ar rives here on Tuesday, May 28, both in the menagerie and during the reg ular performances." The boys are swimming again and declare the water is line. How well one lives while one does live is what counts. Grave! should never be allowed on paved streets. It means serious dam age. Ohio is the pivotal state. It is Taft's native home. Can he carry it? It is doubtful. When the people get a vote on the subject they will limit the president's regime to one term, perhaps of six years. Under the present System as soon as a man is elected president he be gins spending a good deal of his time working for another term. It is infamous. ELECTRIC PUMPS UN COVERED THE BAT TLESHIP MAINE. The Weather. Raising the Maine in Ha vana Harbor was one of the great engineering feats of the decade. A vitally important part of the undertaking was pump ing millions of gallons of sea water out of the cofferdam inclosure. Every gallon of water was pumped out by great electri cally operated pumps sta tioned on huge barges. Switching the power off and on was the only physical labor involved. For pumping of any kind, anywhere, the electric motor driven by central station power excels in reliability, economy and low cost of in vestment. Let us send an expert. OREGON POWER CO.
