Census Figures. Ad Eastern Kx. give the folluwinte : The United .Staltta census, reported thin morning, fellows the smallest rate Tof gain 'he country -as over known. Omitting Indian Territory, Alaska and Hawaii, which have not been heretofore counted in the total, it is only 23.83 per cent, Between 1880 and 1890, t amounted to 2 1,85 p.r cent ; 30.08 per cent between 1870 and 18S0 an. 22.03 per cent oven during the decade of the Civil war-that b9tween 1800 and 1S70. Thus it is seen that not ouly the actual gain, but the percentaite of gain as well of the North Atlantic sle.tes, as reported is greater than ever since 18U0. Bouth Atlantic statea Population, 10,443,548; gain, 1,885,738; percentage of gain between 1880 and 1890, 10.00; 20,78 between 1870 and 1880; and 9.01 during the decade of the civil war. Illinois, Ohio, Miss ouri, Texas, Massachusetts, Indiana, Michigan.llowa, Georgia, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Tennessee was thirteenth ten years ago hut Wi-constn, which was then.fourteanth has taken itB place. Ab to the other states, the list is the same now as in 1890, except that the older in which they come haB beon somewhat changed: Texas has gone from .seventh to sixth place, changing MassachusoetB from sixth to ssven'b. 'Georgia has gon, from twelfth to eleventh, chnnging Ken ucky from eleventh to twelfth. Florida is still thirty-second, hut has gained somewhat on Colorado, which is and was thiity first in population. The largeet percentage uf gain was made by Oklahoma, which rhowed an increase of more than 500 per cent, Texas gained Blightly more than 30 per cut, and led tte Southern Statee; Flori da stood Becond among Southern Staler, with ft gain of nearly 35 per cdiit. Here are Borne new definitions : "Liberty" A good tiling; keep our own and take other people's. "Business" To make money oy act of Congress. "Presidency" An oflice formerly equivalent to Chief Magistrate, but now run strictly iu tho uilore&t uf the va iou combinations of capital, "Boers" -A. very wicked lot of Du'ch men who broke into Bouth Africa several generations ago and wore actually too mrnn and low-lived to give up their homes three different times without grumbling, and even killed a big crowd of English. McKinley and Hay frowned nt them and that kopt other uationaquiot until Englond"benevolently assimilated'' them. The Filipinos Bre just as mean to Nevada is the only State in the Union which showed a decrease in population, and was the only one which decreased betwoen 1880 aud 1890. Though it has boen a State for 30 yearB 't lies a smaller jiopnlatloB than any of the States or loi ritories. Oklahoma has a population which en titles her to admission to statehood, with two representatives in Congress. Tho population of Now Mexico entitlos that Territory to admission as a state. Arl tona, though without Bulllcicnt popula tion to entitle hor to admission, is more populous than either Nevada or Wyo ming, which have both boen admitted. From the Cleveland Plain Poaler. Wilson I understand your wife was an imperialist. lien Peck No, she waB a Seroggins Jauo ScroggiDB but it amounts to the same thing. The cause of imperialism is weak in deed when Bishop Putter can gravely state that our Government was commit ted to its Philippine policy by "Dewey's bluuder,'' Now that election is over we are anxious to hear of arrnnients for ex tending the Corvall'n and Kastern across the mountains Into Kastern 08" Will it be done, If not what has all of the reoent surveying been done for. There are some things lo ludicate tha work may be pushed. One is the fact that other railroads are looking this way, and there il said to be only one ieasible pass for a railroad over the Cascades, and this the Corvallis and Eastern has, add must use il it expects to retain It. A conneetion by rail at this poli.t with Eastern Oregon will mean a good deal for this valley as well as lor the great Inland snplra beyond. N-w Jerev i' run by magicians. TliHt sla e will lake (10,000 and transform it into a millicn by a touch of the pen. There is no merit in continuing a wronv, jus because it has been begun, either by an individual or a nation. Barker, who was to play such au im porunt part in the election, taking 1, 500,000 votes from Bryan got 128 of them in Oregon. The stock brokerB have t ad a big pa lade in Nsw York City in honor of ti,e election of McKinley. Just as natural as a duck to water. Betting iB a verry poor way to make money. Money secured a another man's loss can uover have the right ring to it. We may be whipped, but nevertheless we Bhall continue to stand by the consti tution and have reppect (or the declara tion ol independence. The negative people remained at home on election day and did not vole. It is not a good thing to be a clam in this life. Mark Hanna baa already declineu the nomination for president lour years from now. Certainly, he has al ready been president one term and is elected for another. Two terms Is enough for a man. There te an immense boom in novel writing. An immense number cf new worke of Action have appeared aDd are now in preBB. Some of tucm take aud lift ye a big run and others of them are not worth UBing for kindling a fire. The most potent argument against imperialism is the nomenclature which has been developed since Ibie Issue came before the American people. When one reade expressions Buch as "our new pos sessions, "our colonies," "to rule our new dependencies," be is reading the terms which are inseparable from an Empire Ex. The national W. C. T. U. ha-e sent out Bome pamphlets which Bcore Presi dent McKinley in the most scotching terms, coming pretty close lo making him out a Dr. Jekyl aod a Mr, Hyde. ThiB is given as a matter of news. The election, is over and there is no occasion now to give anything but news, though of course the campaign of education of the masses will continue, and neccessar- ly in ttie regard tbe democratic papers will have something to say. N,it the least remarkable reaul. of the coobus of 1900 is tbat it arreeta the west ward march of what is known as "the centre of population." ThiB point which had been moving steadily westward at eaoh Buccotsive census, was established by the ceneuB 1890 as being in the south ern part of Indiana, at a point a little west of south of Greensburg, the county seat of Decatur County and twenty miles east of Columbus, Geographically it is in laititude 30 doereeB 11 minuteB and 5G seconds, and longitude 85 degrees 32 minutes and 53 seconda. But in the past ten years the popala lion of the States lying wholly east of Ins meridian has increased to almost exactly the Bame extent ae in the States west of it, tho Increase in each case being in round numbers 0,000,000 out of a l"tal of 13,225,000. The remaining 1,225,000 increase is furnished by the Statei of Michigan, Indiana, Sentutky. Tennessee and A'abomn , From the World. The failure of one more well-meant el (ort bi solve the hired-girl problem is noled Willi regret. Mrs, Watterburg of ((Brooklyn, where the hired-giil question is almost as acute aa the problem of bow to establish regu lar daily communication with the real Now York, was the aulbor of a truly in genious plan for securing "peace with honor" between the mistress and maid. Having liied servaul-girls of every na tionality and tongue without success, it occurred to her that as all of them had been classified aa "intelligent help," what ebe probably needed was an .unin telligent'' girl. She accordingly went to i.B t tr.. inland Insane liosuital and hired a woman guaranteed by the super intendent to be utterly unintelligent. Having Installed this able imbecile in bar kitchen Mrs. Watferberg carried the glad tldinga to her neighbore: "1 have solved the eervant-girl problem, just get crazy women." . But this experiment turned out poorly. The hired lunatio mlBtook the kitchen for a padded cell and made a desperate break for freedom. Incidentally, she pummelfd her mistress, who was finally obliged to resbip her to the Long Island Uospttal. Amraclical substitutes for the employ ment offices and the "want ads" the lunltic asylums are appareuliy unrerta- ole. Kino chrvsantheume at tho Presby terian bazaar next Wednosday. Au Eisturu Correspondent says: Republicans now claim that the object of our Government is the increase of trade and in order to accomplish their object tbey aie willing to change their form of government. Our forefathers claimed that the object of our Government was the improvement if men. Our Constitu tion aflorde the best illustration of such government in the world. If the ''object" of government is so changed the "form" of government must oe changed to correspond that is, an empire instead of a republic. Which do tne voters waol? The so-called "bueines inteiee(s"of to day are controlled by non-producerB, and combinations, trusts and unhealthy husi ness Ib the result. All men are so anx ious to exchange their labor and the pro duct of their labor for the product of the labor cf others that if producers control led the quality and price of all produc tione there would he no combinations or trusts and business would be healthy. McKinley is in favor of the combinations. A World Power. The United Statea is a nation number ing 70,000,000 people The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland numbers about 38,000,000 just half ub many. France numbera juat about half aB many also. The German Empire, not counting itB African colonies, numbers about 47.000,- 000 p tuple less than two-thirdB of our population. AuBtria-Hungary has nearly 42,000,000 inhabitants ouly 4. 000, COO more then ball our count. KusBia proper, exo udlng t' e non-Rus-Bian peopleB of Asia that are under her Sag, has a population of about 86,000,000 10,000.000 more than that of the Unit ed States, t LBut our population is growing at the rate of 13,000,000 every ten years. So that the American babies of today wben they arrive at adult age will Bee an American nation numbering 102,000,000 people. As all European populations are sta tionary or nearly so the excess of their births over deaths being lost by emigra tion, moBlly to this country it is rea sonable anticipation that the year 1920 will find the United Stales inhabited by three times as many people as Great Britain and Ireland, one and a half times as many aa the combined populations of the British Isles and France, more than twice as many as Germany and about 15,000,000 more than Russia proper. Furthermore, Hub country already leads all others in total and per capita wealth; it produces one third uf tbe world's total annual product of gold and silver ; it leads all nations as u product r aud consumer of coal, iron and eteel, and it also lends them all in the production and export foodstuff. Wl.ere'ore it would really seem that the United Statee is and must neceBBar i'y remain a very respectable "world power", Tbeie will be no larger "world power" in the twentieth century than this great, free American nation, even if it should just Btay at home and naturally grow and leave Asia to the Asiatics World. Of tho;6(J9 members-ehct of the new House of Commons 501 were members of the last Houee. Of the 103 new members not a few, however, have Berved in previ oua Parliaments. An'' yet it would seem that a few Wineton Churcliills and Henry Normans might add to the wit without subtracting from the wisdom of a body in which the beef-brained countrr squire, the sohd but dull city -banker and the ponderous provincial factory magnate have such an immense preponderance, F.x. The Chinese are tbe moat contrary peeple in the world. Here are some 0 their perversities. f The Chinaman eiiaker his own hand natead of yours. He keeps out of step when walking with yon. He puts bis hat on in salutation. He wbitecs his boots instead of black eniog them. He rides with his heels in his stirrups instead of bis toes. Hia compass points south. His women folk are often seen in trous ers accompanied by men in gowns. Often be throws away tbe frnit of th mellon and eats the ss He laughs on receiving bad news (this to deceive evil spirits.) Hisleft hand is the place of honor. He thinks it polite to ask your age ana income. lie says west-north instead of north west, and sixths-four instead of four ixtui. His favorite present to a parent is a colo. MISFITS. Of course New Jersey voted lor its pocketbook. Joe Wheeler Bays Americans love girls above their flag. . Salt Uiver is now a very popular re port, and on expensive one. A combination of trusts for industrial purposes wilt now be in order. Some things are surer before election than after election, we are sorry to say. The vote in Linn county wrs nouiih to jar the bones of some of the old timers. We will naain have an opportunity to see who ure tbe best friends of the trusts. The English generally have been re joicing over the creat r-publican victory about as much as the republicans them selves. A man in Portland has to push a peanut with a toothpick a mile as pay ment oi an election bet. There is a big field for the fool killer around bis neigh borhood. In Salem the vote for McKinley was reduced from 1611 to 1235 from the 1896 vote, while Brvan's was reduced from 1175 to 803. What is the matter of Sa lem anyway. Struck hy apathy. The cartoonist who' has Uncle Sam firing hia revolver ond throwing his hat like a cow bnv must bavo been running with Roosevelt. It is to be hoped that this Roosevelt spirit does not pervade society very extensively. The state of Oregon has grown consid erably in tbe last four years, and yet tbe vote received by McKinley was sev eral thousand lees than four years ago, while that received by Bryan waB im menaely Ubs. This indicates that some republicans and more democra'8 remain ed at home. Mr. Bryan went to bed on election night at about 10:30 o'clock. A litt'e thing like a national election did not disturb him and he slept peacefully all night. His career as a presidential can didate has undoubtedly ended, but he is a clean man pereonallv -nd he will be heard from in some o.!er field. All the many entei prises that have been waiting on the election will now please puil their throttle. There is no one who will not be glad to feel tbe pulse of genuine prosperity. It is a mighty good tiling in one's business re gardleeB of who iB president. The republicans explain low wheat and a fair price for wool to suit tbeir circumstances. That is, if there is a good price it is due to the administra tion, if there Isn't it is not. As a mat ter of fact there are natural causes for these thing", the great law of supply and demand playing an important part in the matter. All over Oregon democratic voter3j re mained at home and did not vote. About seven hundred less voted in this county than four years ago, though the county has undoubtedly increased in popula tion. The Review says it is the same in Douglas county . Apathy was certainly around, whatever the cause. The San Joae Mercury says a Santa Clara farmer got a wife through a marri age bureau. He also got a law suit, a divorce, a set of foreclosed mortgages and a baby he knows nothing about and has prospects of more things to come. Matrimony on the bureau plan has pos sibilities of acquisition beyond the ex pectation of the ordinary venturer. A Medford lady writing to an Albany friend says that Gov, Seer, recently in that city, made out the democrats every thing bal in the dictionary, but gave McKinley credit for even the eunBbine that makes tbe crops and stock grow. And yet the democrats pay just about half the taxes that support tbe gover nor and the test ol the etate govern ment. A Cbicagoian just returned from a tour of the far West saw the following lo cation notice on a mining claim In tbe Grand Encampment, Wyoming: "We found it, and we claim it by the light of founding it. Itsour'n. It's 750 feet in every direction, except eonthweet and northeast, and there is 300 feet on each side ol this writin'. Its called tbe Bay Horse, and we claim the epurs, and we don't irant nobody jumping on this Bay Harse that's what these trees is around here for, and we've got the same piece cf rope that wa had down in old Miss ouri." The Burlington Railroad sent out the following advertisementrecently : Marcus A. Hanna, the great andl only "Mark," Whom the popocrats would like to see obliterated in the dark, Is to travel through Nebraska in a spec ial, private car, And the people want to hear him, com ing from near and far. He will speak in the city of Lincoln, and that of Wymore, too, And the Burlington offers passage at just one fare clear through. And if yon want to hear him while thus yon have a chance. Take tbe Burlington train at Chester and you'll get there in advance. The Election. Portland, Nov. 8. The latest election returns do rot materially change the re sult. The nates still in doubt are Ken tucky and XehiaBka and the indications are that Bryan carried til former, and MoKiuley the latter. Tbe plurality for the republican national ticket in New York is 145 000 while Udell -ill have about 100,000. Lincoln, Nov. 7, With the exception of a short drive in ihe early evening Mr. Bryan remained in his study today, ris ing late this mornintr and retiring early tonight, lie said this evening that he had no statement of any kind to make at present. In Portland. Nov. 8. Yesterday's addi tions to t' e returns of tbe Oregon elect ion slightly increased the repub'ican pluraiiy in the state from 14,105 to 14, 225. These ligpres are yet subject to material change, however, fnr they are based on unofficial reports from only 560 of the 709 precincts in "he state, the re sults in tho other precincts heiig esti mated. In Indiana. Indianapolis, Nov. 7. Yeaterdav's election resulted in a plurality of piiy where fivm 28,000 to 82,000 to the repub lican national ticket, the triumph 0 the entire state ticke:, and nine, perhaps 10, of the Congressmen, and the choice of a Legislature, that will have a republican majority of 40 on joint ballot. The 4th Congressional district is still in djubt. Quite a Joke. Cleveland, Nov. 7. Speaker Heoder son, at a return dinner, surprised some of his hosts during tho table talk by tell ing them that Senator Hanna's campaign tour of the Northwest had so etirred up that section of the country that the Sen ator was being talk-it about there as a presidential possibility four years hence.
