The defense is on a clause in the policy, which reads, "that 1 will not personally engpge in military or naval service in time of war without first obtaining in each and everv case the written consent of the society." Thompson, who enlisted at Vancouver about a vear ago in the 39th infantry, was in Salem yesterday, leav ing on the night overland for Albany. r. Thompson's corapiny lelt fortland nearly a year ago for Manila where they arrived in December. He s;rved as bugler until the 15th of May when he was cent home to be mustered out on account of sickness. StateiD. an. Mrs. R. O. Miller left Saturday for Portland, wbere she goes to the hospital to have an operation performed. She had a growth on her left breast which she thinks is a cancer. G. Biirkhart, where the lawn was prettily arranged for the purpose. Several hours were spent iu an enjoyable manner in games, story telling and the serving of a delicious lunch. David Peebler died at Lebanon on August 20 at the remarkable age of 07 years acd 23 daya. He was the oldest resident in the cornty. Linn county thuB loseB one of lie bust pioneer citizen e, one whose life was a credit to the stale aa well aB to his tamily. David Peebler was born in Harden county, Ky.( July 28, 1S03. He was married tc Susan Imbler in 1827, soon al ter moving to Illinois. In 18S3 they came to Oregon, locating in Marion county. In 1867 Mr. Peebler purchased a farm near Leuanon, wnere iney jocaieo, where tbey resided until too old to at tend to the active duties on the farm and they afterwards resided witb their daughter Mrs. J. R. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Peebler became members of the German Baptist church in 1828. .Eleven children were born to them, Mrs. Fanny BnKke. Mrs. Mary west, Mra. JNaocy Luis, Mtb. J. Fred Peebler, Mrs. Eliza Smith. Mra; J. W. Cusick and Mr. Geo. D. Peebler surviving. Four children died, two in infancy, Mrs. Montague in 1878 and William Ptebler in 1889.
