WitATHSroRi Wyatt,( Att'y. for Kxecutor. A ulascd Teacher. Editor Democrat : I (ear jour read ers have;grown tiled at the great length of my articles but it bas been necessary to properly show up tie inaccuracies and false reasoning of the Prof, in his defense of the policy. of the Eoglieh in South Africa, Tbe'I'rol. now attempts to attach all the blame for the war n Sout Africa to the Boers, and holds the English blameless, lhia position ia ev palpably uutenable that It hardly require notice. For soiie time the English bad been de manding that tbe Transvaal government should amend i's laws so as to permit the English to vote on more favorable terms than thoee provided for in the then existing laws. The English had no more 'ightto make this demand upon ibe Transvaal government than they have to make euch demand upon the United States or any other country. Suppose tbey sbouldmake this demand upon the United States, and upon being refoeed, should begin to mass the military force! along the Canadian border, we take it for granted that the Prof, would men in and declare tbat it wonld be "inexpedi. ent" to refuee the demand any longer, and tbafthe !i tt!e"pnp," becauBO it was ittle and defenseleBS, should humbly submit to the demands ol the "big dog.' This ia what he wanted the Boers to do. While everybody would see that the righteousness of the case would be will the Americans the Prof, would declare it was with the English. It is verv ap parent that if the Prof, had lived in the days of 17.70 he would have cast his lot with the English instoad of tho rebels who bad suflered from England "a long train of abuses and usurpations " He would have been a proud persistent tory instead of a bravo, devoted patriot. The I'rof. can not but know tbat be is in error when be says it was a case of Belf-delenre on the part of England. She was try ing to force ihe TranBvaal to modify her suffrage laws, and, as she bad no color ot ri&ht. to do this, it wbb tbe most natural thing in human nature that the Boers ahould resist. SuppoBS the Boers "had sneaked off, as a cowardly dog with his caudal appendage betweea bis posterior pedal extremities" when the English Ministry declared they would enforce their demand by the power of tliuir great might, would thoy, too, have been "die honored and diegiaced in the eyes of the civilized world V But upon the Prof's theory the Uoere Bhould bavo submitted, being the weaker power. TboFe who have followed tho Prof, closely know that his sympathy is with! the mighty and powerful,nd not with the weak, notwithstanding the weak may have tbe right on their side. As.'a matter of fact the British government was directly re sponsible for the Johannesburg conspi racy and theJameson raid, notwithstand ing tho 1'rof. sajs it was not. Being British subjects and in tho;employ of the British government it is inconceivable that an intelligent man would sny that the British were not responsible. But the British woro then equipped lo carry things in a high hamh'd wav in the ranevaal, and as they did not turn. eh the raiders there was but oneconcluBlon, and that wap, tbat the English approved of their crime, The Prof, continues : ihid the fact that the lloere had not granted their jusl rights etc.'' Now.Prof. you must know that theee British sub ects had no just claim to the right of suffrage. If llieJBoers i-hould provide in their lawa that tho Brilisb subject Bhould never have the right to volo in the Transvaal itSwould be no Invasion of the rights of the British subject, because he ii.ib no moro right to tbe suffrage than the Sulu King hua to the same right in Oregon. The only power that England j claims in the Transvaal is the right to veto tiealies made by the Transvaal with any foreign government. J lien why bould she with her accustomed audacity attempt to regulate tho niattor of suf frage ill the Transvaal after having ex proeely pledged tho Transvaal that etie would never attempt to regulate her in- rnal affaire. The TranBvaal, of cunrae, denies all uzereiguity by the English over her territory, but England was plainly the overawing aggressor when she attempted o forco the Transvaal lo modify the suf ragelawe. The Prof, has said enough n hts!articles lo disclose to those who have read tl.em tbat ho bas no concep tion of the matter of international righlB. He is (,f the opinion that those of superior intelligence have the right, por ee, to mlo over those of inferior in telligence. He 1b poisoned with the idea that might makes right. He forgets that Ihe great Declaration of Independ ence sets up the fundamental truth that all men are created equal, that they ' are endowed with certain inalienabls'rights; tbat among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness i and that the Boer is as fully endowed with these rights as any Englishman, and that the Hoer is committing no greater crime when he invades England to destroy that government, than tbe Englishman commits when he invedea the Transvaal to destroy tbe government there. Sum ming up briefly: The Dutch settled the Cape Colony country in US- aod.ei-UMislied a gov ernment of their own there anj lired there peaceably, making their own lawa, K'lurntf) Your Hnweii Wun imrsreu, C:mf mttinrtlc, cure constipation forrrr. a' Hc. It L'. C. O. (Ml, uruifkitarcfuDrtiBonej. when Great Britain in 1800, during tbe apoleonio war, swooped down upon the colony and took possession of it. The English with their proverbial aadacity set up a government of tbeir own and their courts and local governments were to tyrannous that Ihe Dutch were com pared to leave the country. They went north and,'tetabliehed another colony in a portion of country unoccupied. Later the Dutch established a colony called Natal but tbe British soon drove them from tbat colony and they finally set tled in the Transvaal and from here tbey are now being driven and it is this high handed, outrageous robbery of nations that tbe Prof, undertakes to defend and excuse. And the defense is a Bad, weak ly one. Student. The efforts of the republicans to evade imperialism are pitiful. Tbe 6. O P. bas degenerated indeed when it has not the courage of its convictions on a vital Bubject like that. However, monpy bags are traditionally cowardly and the repudlican party consists almost entirely of. these nowadays. The people of Kentucky are unques tionably giving a fair trial to Powers, acciiBed cf complicity in thetioebel mar der- Tbe jurv is almost equally divided between the two political parties as are the spectators in the court room. There is no further excuBS for the refusals of Governors Mount and Roosevelt to honor requisitions lor Mr. Taylor. The hearing in the Neeley case has been postponed till August 23. Another postponement will take it perilously close to the election, and the election without Neeley brought to trial means a good many additional votes fur the dem ocrats. Don't forget that, Mr. McKio ley. Both parties are watching the German voter with much anxiety. If he follows his leaders and leaves the republican paity in the middle west in any consid erable, proportion, Bryan will be elected by a tremendous electoral majority. If McKinley is responsible for the great wheat crops of Kansas and Iowa, who is responsible for the utter failure of the tame rrop in Minnesota and the Da' kotas. Women can keep secrets. They often keep secret for a long time the fact that they are suffering from drams, inflammation, ulcer ation, or female weakness. But tliey cau't keep the se cret very long, because the hollow eyes, cheeks that have lost their fretShuess, and the irritability which comes from sorely tried nerves, all conspire to publish the sto ry of suffering. The usual motive for such secrecy. dread of indelicate questions and offen sive examinations, is removed by Dr. Pierce's methods. Diseases of the wom anly organs are perfectly cured by the use of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. Sick women can consult Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo. N. Y., by letter free. "Your wonderful medicine, 'Favorite Pre cHiilion,'" writes Mrs. C. N. Anderson, of Rock bridge Haths, Rockbridge Co., Va "is a Cod send to weak ntul sickly women, restoring good health without subjecting their weak ucrves to the shock of nu examination. I was all run down In health; could uot vork but a short time without resting". Was very nervous find had a very poor appetite. decided to unite to Dr. Fierce and state ntvease, and am thankful that I did. for I received" n favorable reply. I took six bottles of 'Favorite Prescription,' one of 'C.old en Medical Discovery, mid one vial of ' Pellets, and I can now work as well us I could before I was taken sick. I think Dr. Tierce's medicine the best In the world for sick and nervous women. " m Statsc ok Ohio, I'm vv lo'.tiio, ) lilH'AS Oci'NTY, Kr.ink .1 .
