London, Mav 26. The latest intelli
gence from Lord Roberts' headquarters
at Vredefort Station filed Thursday was
that the British were rapidly advancing.
General Hamilton bad effected a junc
tion with Linl Roberts. The country in
front of them was clear of Boers to V il

ine retreat ol isotha s lurces from the

Meant to Fight
Khoonstad, May 24. Although the

fight. Along the steeo sides of the south

Most anything can be done with fig
ures just before election. iThe repblicans
now admit that tne coat of the couuiy
administration during Judge Barton's
term has been atuut $7,00C less than
during Judge Duncan's torm, and yet It
IB a fact that the total taxes for all pur
poses paid in the county during the Dun
can administration were over $100,000
more than during Judge Barton's term.
This is what counts. It is asserted that
U, 000 more for roads and bridges were
expended during the Duncan term than
during the Barton term, a fact due lo the
more expensive bridges that bad to be
erected then. The elate taxes as a rule
are not paid in this county until later
than this. There is plenty of money in
eight for the purpose and county ex
panses also, with a $9,000 margin for
emergencies. In tbe meantime tbe
present lnw levy of 14 mills, several
mills lower than any other levy in the
state, is a very pleasant thing these days
with wheat at 40 cents and hops at 5,
things a majority of farmers depend up
on for paying taxes .
