CAKE OF THE COFFEE POT.
Not even milk pans require more scrupu
lous care than the coffee pot. It may be
rinsed after each time of using, and yet be
far from clean. There is an oily property
about coffee which adheres In spite of rins
ing out. You can see this for yourself by
taking almost any coffee pot that has been
some time in use, (unless it has been very
carefully kept,) and you will find clinging
to it a sort of black grease, not brown ;
this will come off if you rub a cloth around
the Inside. Now, this deposit, for instance,
for some reason w hich many would like to
have expli Ined, destroys the fragrance,
color and flavor of coffee. If you see your
coffee Iooks black-brown instead of ruddy
brown, you will know It will be flavorless,
haw-ever strong. To keep this black oil
from the pot, it must be daily washed, not
rinsed, scalded and dried. Each piece of a
French coffee pot should be separately
dried before It is put away. If packed to
gether wet the strainers w ill in t'me give a
metallic taste. Another reason for great
care is that without it the strainers get
clogged and the coffee will not go through.
If you find that your coffee pot has been
neglected, put a piece of washing soda as
large as a hickory nut into hot water ; set
the strainers in it ; let them stand on the
6tove for hours ; put the same in the cof
fee pot ; then rub and brush both till the
wire gauze is clear and all the black re
moved ; then run boiling water slowly
through, and dry It. Let the care be daily
afterward. The grease will not form, nor
will the gauze fill up if a pint or so of boil
ing water is poured through every morn
ing, and it is dried before being put away.
Cold water is worse than useless, as It sets
the oil. Sometimes the coffee pot is put
away exactly as it leaves the table, with
left-over coffee In it. This should never
be. In drying the coffee pot, or warming
it, be careful not to let It get too hot, or
there will be a flavor of burnt coffee to
spoil the beverage for that occasion.
"The Presidential term of office should
be extended to six years, and the President
elected by a popular vote. United States
Senators should be elected the same way.
But these reforms can only come through
constitutional amendments, which must
originate with Congress, and so there is lit
tle hope of their coming to pass. East
Oregonian.
These reform would meet the hearty
approval of the people.but our cotemporary
is slightly in error about its being necessary
that they should originate with Congress.
On the application of the legislatures of
two-thirds of the states Congress would
hive to call a convention to propose amend
ments to the constitution. We suggest
that the legislature of this state soon to
meet pass a joint resolution calling upon
Congress to call a convention for the pur
pose above indicated, and then send the
resolution to all the other state legislatures

You will find that,lf you keep the same side
always opposite the central sphere, the
moving one will turn once on Its own axis
in making the journey around the table.
Tough beef is made tender by laying a
few minutes in vinegar water, or put
spoonful of vinegar into the water in which
fowls or meat are boiling, and it will make
them tender.
Kerosene will remove spots from furni
ture ; it is excellent to clean oil cloth or
' zinc. If vou snill it on vour clothes hane
them in the air and the spot and smell will
both soon disappear.
A waterfall has been discovered in the

ceed Niagara In beauty, though not equal
to It in volume.
A wineglass of strong borax water in a
pint of raw starch will make collars and
cuffs stiff and glossy.

With a little care every part of stale
bread can be utilized. All the odds and end8
of crusts should be spread evenly on a pan
and allowed to dry in a warm oven. When
quite dry, put them in a small bag made of
ticking or canvas, and pound them fine
with a mallet. Sift them, and put them In
empty fruit cans. They will keep for
months, and can be used for breading meats,
fish, croquettes,omclettes and making dres
sing for fowls.

and low spirits far beyond what either in.
