Said an old market man to a newspaper
reporter : "The correct way to buy and
sell eggs is by weight. Number does not
show their value, weight does. What jus
tice or business sagacity is there in paying
the same price for one as for the other Ms
not the farmer who sells a large egg for
the same price that his neighbor sells a
small one cheated ? And Is not the buyer
of the small one cheated ? Just as well
might butter be sold by roIls,the small one
bringing as much as the large one. People
do not sell butter by the number of pieces
or cheese by number j nor should the deal
er sell eggs by number. If eggs were
bought and sold by weight, the value of
certain breeds of fowls would be changed.
Now, the breed that furnishes the greatest
number of eggs is the most profitable ;
then it would be the breed that furnishes
the greatest weight. Some breeds are re
markable for the smallness of their eggs ;
such breeds would necessarily suffer in
popularity, while the fowls that lay large
eggs would gain.
The South has raised more Indian corn
this year than usual, hence comparatively
little will be required from the West. On
the other hand, the East, and especially
New England,has a moderate yield of corn
by ieason of severe frosts and a late wet
season.

Senator Quay, recently held in this city, it
is announced that proceedings will be be
gun in the Virginia state courts and the

president in the electoral college.

erford B. Hayes was greeted to-night by
an audience which packed Farwell hall to
suffocation, the ex president was a guest
of the state board of charities, and his ad
dress to-night was on "Prison Reform."

Washington, Nov. 22. The treasurer
of the United States, Hon. James W. Hy
at, has submitted to Secretary Fairchild
his annual report ot the operations of the
treasury. The net returns of the govern
ment for the fiscal year ended June 3o,iSS3
were $379,2110,074, and net expenditures
$267,924,801, the surplus receipts available
for reduction of the public debt being
$111,341,273 an increase of $7,87o,i76over
the year before. As compared with 1S87,
the "revenues were $7,862,797 greater and
expenditures $7378 less.

London, Nov. 22, Henry George in an
interview, gave his views as to the causes
leading to the defeat of Cleveland at the
late election. He said the president's vetoes
of pension bills were one of the causes.and
that another was his civil service reform
