Daily Democrat A3 TO EKMOVAIiS. A subscriber want to know if thi state merit made by the Orrgonian that great numbers of federal officials in Oregon were removed by President Cleveland before the expiration of their terms is true. The statement is false in a very great drgree. The statement as to removal of postmasters all over the state before the expiration of their terms is false in its entirety. Many changes were made in the fourth-class postoiTiccs, but these offices have no terms. They serve at the pleasure of the Post master General, and he alone makes the changes. As to the postmasters in this state who hold by appointment of the President not one in this state was remov ed by Cleveland. They all served their terms out. These are the post offices : Portland, Albany, East Portland, Oregon City, Corvallis, Eugene, Jacksonville, As toria, Dalles, Pendleton, Daker City and Salem. The republican postmaster at Ore gon City who was appointed by Arthur just completed his term a few days ago. The republican postmaster at Salem who was appointed by Arthur in December, 1SS4, and who on general principles ought to have been removed long siuce, still holds that office. As to the statement that numerous officials of the land offices in the state were removed we think the Orcgo man is in error. The friends of ciyil ser vice reform -will be more lhan pleased if Harrison shall make as good a showing The legislature of California is demo cratic in both branches. In the Senate the democrats have 21 and the republicans 16 members with one vacancy. In the House the democrats have 41 and the republicans 39 members, making a majority on joint ballot of 8. According to the Oregonian no state is to be considered in the Union that votes the democratic ticket. That shows clearly the standard of the Orcgtnu'an's patriotism. The foreign trade of the United States during October has slightly exceeded in exports those of last year, while imports have fallen slightly behind. It costs $1,200,000 per annum to keep the streets of Paris clean. UOI.DEN Itri.fi HAZAAK. Boots and Shoes. Call at A. B. Me Ilwain's and see the ladles' kid and pebble goat shoe, for $1.50, former price $3.50 A Democrat man has seen the shoe and can pronounce It a remarkably cheap shoe for the former price. NOTICE. The state, is given up to manufactures, and the issue was fairly made on the reduction of the tariff, with no side issues and relatively little money used by either side. The vote was unprecedentedly large. That of the republicans was increas ed over four years ago by 2930, but that of the democrats was increased by 5142. The plurality for Blaine, which was 6639, has been reduced 104427, a loss of 2213 votea. ; This is on a total vote of 40,769, which is 25 per cent larger than four years ago. Of this only a normal percentage was cast by new voters. As the democrats gain a lit tle over five-eights of the increased vote, it is plain that on a like issue in 1892 the state must be regarded as doubtful. Foreign bankers advise that at European money centres it is evident that the flow of gold is toward America, in payment for food supplies to feed the hungry millions of the Old World. It is evident from the latest reports as to foreign crops that Europe must continue to draw heavily upon us for bread and meat, and that mutt be In our favor for months to come. There are 488 canning houses, employing 25,000 hands, who receive over $10,500,000 annually in wages. One thousand five hundred men additional are engaged as canmakert. It is estimated that the area of unre claimed swamp and marsh land In the United States that can be drained and brought under cultivation Is equal to that of all the cultivated lands, or nearly 300, 000,000 acres. Much of this land could be reclaimed without grat difficulty or ex pense, and would make farm land of great value. To keep lamp chimneys from breaking put a cloth in the bottom of a large pan.fill the latter with cold water and place the new chimney in it cover the pan and let its contents boil one hour, then take from the fire and let the chimney remain in the water until it is cold. Times of general calamity and confusion have ever been productive of the greatest minds. The purest ore is produced from the hottest furnace, and the brightest thunderbolt is elicited from the darkest storm. According to Johann Faber, the famous manufacturer of Nuremberg, the people of the United States use, in round numbers, about 100,000,000 lead pencils every year. ; .JU v.
