LOCAL RECORD. A Winning Card. We can not make too much of .lie statement made in Oregon's leading paper that in the matter of trans portation Albany has the advantage over all the Willamette Valley cities. "It is an open secret thai the mer chant of Albany gets goods laid down at his door cheaper than do the dealers of any other place In the valley. It Is known that wheat in Albany commands a price within 5 cents nearer the San Francisco price than It did before the completion of the Oregon Pacific to her doors." i Two Brothers. The following from the Baker City Democrat is an account of two as ferocious brothers as one often meets : "A horrible duel between the Hutchison brothers took place at Blackfoot last week. A feud has existed between the two brothersjohn and James, for som e lime. James had threatened to shoot John on sight, and that afternoon they met In a billiard hall. Both pulled their revolvers and began firing simultaneously. Four shots were exchanged and John turned and ran down the street, the blood streaming from a wound in the side of his neck. James fell to the Boor on his face while the blood streamed out of a gastly wound in the right temple, the ball came out at the base of the brain, which oozed out through the hole made," A. C. A Stisoy Appropriation, As far back as 1886 steps were taken to have a monu ment erected to the memory of Hon. J. B. Nesmith, of this county. The last legisla ture appropriated $250 for the purpose. The monument has arrived and is being placed over his grave on the old home farm, but the State is not paying for it. The family is bearing the total expense and the sum appropriated, we understand, will not be drawn from the treasury. The reason Is that the amount was so small as to scarcely be worth applying in the manner intended. nesisu'c Tremens. A tramp tailor named Reed, who has been In the city for several days in an intoxicated condition, was examined this afternoon by a couple of phvsiciansto "certain if he was insane ; but ft was dis covered that it was only a bad case of de- iinum tremens, ine man was born in Ireland, had lived in Scotland.HVales, Kan sas and California, besides his short exis tence in Oregon." The ounishment for such an offense, on conviction Is six months to ten rears in the penitentiary, or a year In a county jail.or a 6ne of not exceeding $500. You'll Observe.
