Prominent Man Murdered.
Wenon a, Ills., Nov. 12. A most blood
curdling and atrocious murder was com
mitted here early this morning. The city
is in a fever heat of excitement over the
murder of Peter Howe, a wealthy banker.
and wife, aged 73 and 69. The cause -ol
this terrible deed is attributed to petty spite
on the part of Charles Burkhart. 1 he do
mestic in the house, Sarah Richardson, a
handsome lass of 19, and Burkhart's step
daughter, had often been importuned to
come and live with him, but she refused to
do so, and he thought the Howes were at
the bottom of her objections. lie therefore
concluded to murder them.

Spokane Falls, Nov. 12. One surprise
follow another in the gigantic strides made
by Spokane along the smooth highway of
prosperity. I. S. Cammeron, vice-president
of the Union Pacific, C. J. Hubbard of
Kansas City, and Charles Frances Adams,
president of the Union Pacific, have just
consummated the purchase of a large tract
of land on the north side within the city
borders.
Alaska.
Washington, Nov. 12. The governor
of Alaska, APSwineford, in his annual
report to the secretary of the interior,states
that the white population has greatly in
creased. He estimates that there are 30,000
natives, and the total population is 49,850,
and of this number 65c? are whites, 19,000
Creoles and 2905 Aleuts.

two Northern counties change the plurali
ty of the vote in the First congressional
district from DeHaven, rep., to Thompson,
dem. The latter now has a plurality of
about 110, with one full county and parts
of two counties to hear from.

of Knights of Labor delegates to the gen
eral assembly are arriving In the city, to
attend the session which begins to-morrow.
A lively time is expected, as it is thought
the opposition to Genereal Master Work
man Powderly will develop strongly. Ow
ing to distance,many district assemblies will
not be here.

turns make Cleveland's majority in Georgia

Spokane Falls, Nov. 12 A dispatch
from Wardner, Idaho, just received states
that Charlie Garrett, colored and Joe Mor
gan, white, commenced shooting each oth
er this evening in Angus McDonald's
saloon, over at Burke, which resulted in
the wounding of two bvstanders named
James Shannon and William Lynott Shan
non was snot tnrough the abdomen, and is
not expected to live. Lynott was shot
through the shoulder, and will recover
Charlie Garrett, one of those who did the
shooting, came in and gave himself up.
He was also shot in the arm. '

ing sense, is shown by the fact that a sin'
gle firm on Kearney street, M. A, Gunst &
Co.,had in its possession $i80,cco as stakes.
In addition the same firm is said to
have placed $00,000 In Partland, inakine a
total of $276,000 bet through one source
alone, hearing this In mind, it is not un
reasonable to assume that nearly $1,000,000
was staked on this coast upon the general
result. ,
