LOCAL RECORD. "James Brothers." A gentleman from Millers says the real trouble with the Co!e brothers Is that they recently read the thrilling account of the lives of the James brothers and concluded to do like wise on a small scale, being well Imbued with the spirit of the daring adventures of those famous men; that they had a list of about twenty men, to whom they intended to send notices to prepare for "threshings," some of which were sent, the plan being to make themselves feared in the community where they resided. Otherwise, we under stand they were on good terms with their neighbors. If this is not correct we shall be very g'.ad to give the proper version, if the parties interested, orothers,will hand it into our sanctum. Their Ratification-. It occurs Thurs day night around the Court House, where a log cabin is to be burned and speeches made. Capt. Humphrey will be President of the evening, U W Watts, Marshal and prominent men from different parts of the countv Vice Presidents. Major Jones will build the cabin, which will take abou t a do.en cords af wood, two barrels of kero sene and a hundred pounds of tar. It will no doubt be a big "blow out," but pernaps no larger than what the Democrats would have had if Cleveland had been re-elected. Made Him Insane. John Stanton was yesterday brought from Umatilla county and placed In the asylum. His insani.y grows out of religious excitement. Upon her death bed his sister had sent to him her book of prayer and over this he pondered until his mind became deranged, lie Is vio lent and would not hesitate to attack his friends with an axe. Joitrpal. In The Next Legislature. There will be nine democrats In the upper house and nir.e in the lower house of trie next Legislature. Of the latter three, Hons. J Meyer, R C Miller and J B R Merelock are from Linn county and Hon S Moos, of Lake, and Hon V K Price, of Jackson,are former residents of the countv. Hon's R A Irvine,,!' E Cauthorn and R M Veatch will be the only democrats in the upper house from the Valley. Sand. Miss Beatrice Sjoberg, a Danish lady of Salem, figuratively speaking, pc seises lots of sand. Saturday site paid an election wager by wheeling Isaac Scott through the streets of balem several blocks, A majority of people backout of such bets. Though several have been made in Albany none have been carried out. A Different Tiiino. If this isn't true about a Portland man one of our exchanges s to blame. About 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning he arose from his bed, donned his pants and vest and sallied forth on (he streets hatless and boot less in search of more lightning bug juice. In this condition, (not theory,) Officer McClain found him and put him in the cooler. Yesterday morning when Marshall Hayes opencd'his cell door he stepped out into the hall, and glancing around, picked up a $20 gold piece which ne nau uroppeo on tne cell noor during the night and which rolled under the cell door into the hall. It was a matter of great sur prise that a man in his condition should have money. Being considerably sobered up he was permitted to go. The Worst Yet. Of all the fool bets the following mode in Poitland covers up all the rest, and it is no wonder the asylum Is filling so rapidly : "A nov el bet is re ported from Portland, between W F Car son, traveling passenger agent of the Northern Pacific, and W H Mead, general agent of the Royal route, both well known here, Mr Carson issix feet tall and weighs over 203. The bet was that the loser should wear the other's clothes at his place of business for one day. Mead is a Demo crat and lost, and he will certainly look unique in trowsers four inches too long and too small at the waistband by 12 inches." Petition Disallowed. The petition of George Scott for license to sell spirituos liquors in quantities less than a quart in I lore b precinct was disallowed by the board of county commissioners yesterday, the reinonstrators to the granting of the same being much greater than the petition er. Ross has been running aloon for some time and the people of lloreb are not at all anxious for him to remain with them in the capacity of vender of tangle-foot. Statesman.
