Daily Democrat. Alread y there Is considerable talk in this town as to who will take charge o! the post office after March 4th. C. W, Watts is spoken of more than any one else. Baker, republican, who through the lav ish use of muney sent out by the manu. facturers of Pennsylvania, defeated Msr rison for Congress two years ago, In the iSth Illinois Congressional district, was In turn defeated by Fordain, democrat, at the late election. It Is one of the little bright pots left. Shakespeare must have had the ordinary office-seeker under the coming adminis tration in view when he wrote : "The man that hath not music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems and sfoils. Let no man trust him." At the great steel works in Cleveland, a large electric-inagnet is used, -suspended from a crane, to pick up iron or steel bars and billets. It willtake up Soo pounds, and, as soon as the electric current is turned off after moving, drop It in the proper place, thus doing the work of a gang of men. The negroes are progressing. A dental school for their race has been established in Nashville, Tenn. It is the first institu tion of the kind in the world. A few years ago negro dentists would have starved, but there is now a good prospect for fortunes for them. When a negro was a slave he had the best teeth in the world. As soon as he became a citizen his teeth began to decay. This is not so much the result of the imposition of suffrage on our brother in black as of his change In diet and habits. So long as he went to bed at dark and lived on corn bread and fat meat he was all right. When he began to indulge in whisky and sweetmeats his teeth and his character both commenced to decay. ADVICE IOR WIVES, Be gentle and firm with children. Beware of the first disagreement. Beware of meddlers and tale bearers.' Learn to speak in a gentle tone of voice. Learn to deny yourself and prefer others. Avoid moods and pets and fits of sulki ness. Never charge a bad motive if a good one is conceivable. Learn to govern yourselves and to be gentle and patient. Learn to say kind and pleasant things whenever opportunity offers. Never speak or, act In anger until you have prayed over your words or acta. Remember that, valuable as is the gift of speech, silence is more valuable. Never retort a sharp or angry w?. It Is the second word that makes the quarrel. Study the characters of each and sym pathize with all their troubles, however small. Remember that you are married to a man and not to a god ; be prepared for imper fections. Do not neglect the little things, if they can effect the comfort of others in the smallest degree. Don't be always teasing him for money, and keep the household expenses well with in your allowance. Once In awhile Irt your husband have the last word; It will gratify him and be no particular loss to you. Do not expect too much from othes, but forbear and forgive, as you desire forbear ance and forgiveness youself. Read something In the papers beside fashion notes and society columns; have some knowledge of what is going on In foreign countries. Even If your husband should have no heart he Is sure lo have a stomach, so be careful to lubricate the marriage yoke with well cooked dinners. Guard your tempers, especially In sea sons of ill health, irritation and trouble, and soften them by prayers and a sense of your own shortcomings and errors. And first be as kind and courteous to your husband as you were when he was your lover. Then you used to look up to lilin ; do not now look down upon him. Let him know more than you do once in a while; It keeps up his-self respect and you are none the worse for admitting that you are not actually Infallibbe. Respect your husband's relations, es pecially his mother; she Is none the less his mother because she Is your mother-in-law; she loved him before you did. Be a companion to your husband, if he be u wise man, and if he is not, try to make him become vour companion, kalse his standard; do not let him lower yours. Mr. Harrison is known to be intensely partisan, and will have none but republicans under him. If his desire is to have men of honesty and competency, he will have much, trouble in filling the offices in the South, as his party is made up mainly in that region of carpet baggers.
